paperback. Condition: Very Good in Wrappers. No Jacket. Pittsburgh. 2018. May 2018. University of Pittsburgh Press. 1st American Edition. Very Good in Wrappers. 9780822965428. Latino and Latin American Profiles. 6 x 9. 248 pages. paperback. keywords: Latin America Poetry Literary Studies. DESCRIPTION - The Once and Future Muse p…resents the first major study of the life and work of Dominican-born bilingual American poet and translator Rhina P. Espaillat (b. 1932). Beginning with her literary celebrity as the youngest poet ever inducted into the Poetry Society of America, it traces her relative obscurity after 1952 when she married and took on family and employment responsibilities, to her triumphant return to the poetry spotlight decades later when she reclaimed her former prestige with a series of award-winning poetry collections. The authors define Espaillat's place in American letters with attention to her formalist aesthetics, Hispanic Caribbean immigrant background, poetic community-building, bilingual ethos, and domestically-minded woman-of-color feminism. Addressing the temporality of her oeuvre - her publishing before and after the splitting of American literature into distinct ethnic segments - this work also highlights the demands that the social transformations of the 1960s placed on literary artists, critics, and readers alike. There is no way to understand the great new wave of Hispanic poetry without recognizing the singular achievement of Rhina P. Espaillat. Her understated, compressed, and classical poems upend all the Anglo clichEs about Latino poetry. Her lyrics are as cool as a Chet Baker solo and just as deeply felt. Uninsistent and self-assured, Espaillat is the urbane voice of the new Latino poetry. - Dana Gioia. This comprehensive volume makes a place for Espaillat as a major poet through a range of identities: a woman, a Latina, an immigrant, a bilingual speaker, a mother, and a wife, but most particularly as a formalist. That so many groups make a claim to her speaks to her enduring appeal. - Kim Bridgford. inventory #43694.

Paperback. Condition: New. Silvio Torres-Saillant's collected writings examine political contradictions within Latinx identity in the United States.Since the 1990s Silvio Torres-Saillant's work has questioned the notion of Latinidad, challenging presumptions of panethnic unity within the US Hispanic population and assessing domi…nant modes of Latinx representation. The essays in Problematic Paradigms and the Contours of US Latinidad examine the dynamics of a diverse collective of over 65 million people whose cultural heritage, ancestral origins, and belief systems arguably differ as much as they resemble one another. The volume dissects prevailing assumptions, namely the essentializing sense of homogeneity in the Latinx "community," which mask important nuances and fascinating contradictions. Torres-Saillant also targets the role of marketing and mass communications in shaping popular perceptions of ethnic groups, thereby tracing connections between media rhetoric and the language of scholarship.Newly revised by editors Nancy Kang and Michael Nieto Garcia, this collection curates Torres-Saillant's core contributions to Latinx studies over the last two decades and underscores the veteran scholar's evolving thoughts on key conversations in the field. The epilogue narrates his beginnings in Caribbean studies, acknowledges his ongoing analysis of Dominican blackness, and discourages uncritical views of cultural heritage.

Paperback. Condition: New. The Culture and Philosophy of Ridley Scott, edited by Adam Barkman, Ashley Barkman, and Nancy Kang, brings together eighteen critical essays that illuminate a nearly comprehensive selection of the director's feature films from cutting-edge multidisciplinary and comparative perspectives. Chapters examin…e such signature works as Alien (1979), Blade Runner (1982), Thelma and Louise (1991), Gladiator (2000), Hannibal (2001), Black Hawk Down (2001), and American Gangster (2007). This volume divides the chapters into three major thematic groups: responsibility, remembering, and revision; real, alienated, and ideal lives; and gender, identity, and selfhood. Each section features six discrete essays, each of which forwards an original thesis about the film or films chosen for analysis. Each chapter features close readings of scenes as well as broader discussions that will interest academics, non-specialists, as well as educated readers with an interest in films as visual texts. While recognizing Scott's undeniable contributions to contemporary popular cinema, the volume does not shy away from honest and well-evidenced critique. Each chapter's approach correlates with philosophical, literary, or cultural studies perspectives. Using both combined and single-film discussions, the contributors examine such topics as gender roles and feminist theory; philosophical abstractions like ethics, honor, and personal responsibility; historical memory and the challenges of accurately rendering historical events on screen; literary archetypes and generic conventions; race relations and the effect of class difference on character construction; how religion shapes personal and collective values; the role of a constantly changing technological universe; and the schism between individual and group-based power structures. The Culture and Philosophy of Ridley Scott assembles the critical essays of scholars working in the fields of philosophy, literary studies, and cultural studies. An international group, they are based in the United States, Canada, Argentina, Italy, Greece, Korea, the United Kingdom, and New Zealand. The guiding assumption on the part of all the writers is that the filmmaker is the leading determiner of a motion picture's ethos, artistic vision, and potential for audience engagement. While not discounting the production team (including screenwriters, actors, and cinematographers, among others), auteur theory recognizes the seminal role of the director as the nucleus of the meaning-making process. With Scott an active and prolific presence in the entertainment industry today, the timeliness of this volume is optimal.
