Add to baskethardcover. Condition: Good. Publication: London, Jacob Tonson, 1726 Formatting: 12mo, pp. [xxxvi], 267. Condition Report: Good. The book remains intact and readable with complete text pages, but shows moderate signs of wear and use to the full contemporary blind-tooled calf binding. The boards exhibit fading, rubbing, and general darkening, while the spine, featuring raised bands and a remnant red morocco label, suffers from chipping to the head and tail alongside minor cracking and leather dryness. Internally, there is a previous owner's ink inscription dated 1831 to the front free endpaper; however, the pages otherwise present well, maintaining their structural integrity with only typical light foxing and occasional browning to the margins. Catalogue Note: This is the first volume of a complete three-volume set, notably representing the first time Joseph Addison's Miscellaneous Works were printed "in Twelves" (duodecimo format), as highlighted on the advertisement leaf facing the title page. Edited by Thomas Tickell, who also provided an account of the author's life, this edition compiles Addisonâs poetry, plays, and prose. The front free endpaper bears an early nineteenth-century ownership inscription: "George Marshall / Field House / Jan: 29. 1831". While complete three-volume sets of this 1726 Tonson imprint appear on the open market with some regularity, individual orphaned volumes such as this one are less commonly encountered alone, primarily serving as reading copies or replacements to complete incomplete sets. First published posthumously under the editorial care of his close friend Thomas Tickell, Joseph Addison's Miscellaneous Works, in Verse and Prose gathers the esteemed English essayist and poet's extensive literary output. This collection captures the elegant style, sharp intellect, and polite wit that made Addison a cornerstone of eighteenth-century literature, cementing his legacy far beyond his famous journalistic contributions to The Spectator and The Tatler.
