After ordination, his life as a monk emphasized music, primarily Gregorian Chant, which he studied at six universities in the U.S. and in England. Nicholson also had two extended periods of study of Gregorian Chant at Solesmes Abbey in France, which is a highly-regarded center for the study of Gregorian Chant. In 1968 he earned a master's of music from Northwestern University, in Evanston, Ill. His work as a choirmaster at Mount Angel Seminary began in 1950 and continued there to 1965.
