"The author introduces his book by a description of the art of carpet knotting in Asia Minor, the ornamental motifs of these carpets, the centres where the Turkish prayer rugs were knotted, the materials utilized, and finally the date of the manufacture of prayer rugs. The author then analyses the decorative motifs in Turkish prayer rugs and deals with his subject in a way which makes technical information easy and simple to all those interested in the study of Islamic art. The book contains a good number of selected drawing's representing different decorative motifs, and a map showing the rug knotting centres in Asia Minor. It also contains 22 plates showing the 36 rugs which the author has chosen for his study." Shelf wear and some foxing to covers, with some loss to the top edge and lower spine area. The English translation was revised by Michael Fairbanks, of the English School, Heliopolis, so the English is good. The 22 plates show 3 17th century Transylvanian; 9 Ladik: 2 17th century, 5 18th century and 2 19th century; 1 17th century Konya; 14 Kula: 2 17th century; 9 18th century and 3 19th century; and 9 19th century carpets: 2 from Kir-Shehir, 3 Mudjar, 1 each Touzla Madjidieh, Bergana and Ushak. The description of the plates give the age, size, colors, and the inventory number. The text describes the centers of rug production in Asia Minor and the organization of prayer rugs, with extensive discussion, illustrated by figures, of border designs. Bibliography. Book.
