This book illustrates how the preservation of humus content in soil increases soil moisture retention, which leads to increased crop yield and profitability. The author's original research on the soil of the New Hampshire College farm reveals a proportional relationship between available nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, and the amount of humus in the soil. In addition, the author provides a comprehensive examination of the effect of tillage on humus content, showing that continuous tillage results in a rapid decrease in humus. This book offers a solution to soil degradation that will be of significant value to farmers and ecologists alike. Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the availability of soil potash in clay and clay loam soils. The author conducted a series of experiments over several years to determine if natural potash compounds could provide enough nutrients for grass crops without additional fertilization. The study found that these soils contained significant amounts of potash that were gradually released over time, fulfilling the nutritional demands of grasses. The author also explored the effects of lime and gypsum on potash availability, discovering that lime did not increase solubility but could influence the movement of water in the soil. Furthermore, the experiments revealed that added potash fertilizers were largely absorbed by the soil, preventing significant leaching. Through detailed analyses and field observations, this book provides valuable insights into the complex relationship between soil chemistry, plant nutrition, and agricultural practices, offering practical guidance for farmers and landowners seeking to optimize soil fertility and crop yields. Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the educational conditions of a suburban and rural county, Montgomery County, Maryland, as they stood in 1912-13. The authors, E. Fred Eastman and H. N. Morse of the Department of Church and Country Life of the Board of Home Missions of the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America, surveyed economic, social, and religious aspects of the county before publishing this volume as a supplement to their original report. The authors found that the county was in a state of economic transition, with a shift from agriculture to suburban development. This shift was particularly pronounced in the lower end of the county, where it adjoined the District of Columbia. Despite the economic changes, farming remained the primary means of wealth production in the county. The authors also noted that the social life of the county was highly uneven, both as regards the geographical distribution of social organizations and the classes in the communities which they reached. They found that only a small proportion of the population was provided for by these organizations, and that there were none of any sort for the laboring and tenant classes. The authors conclude that the educational conditions of the county were a reflection of the general characteristics of the people as a whole. They found that the county had a relatively high proportion of one-room schools, which they identified as a major problem in the development of rural education. They also found that many of the school buildings were in need of repair and that few had adequate facilities for recreation. Despite these challenges, the authors also found that the county's school system was making progress. They noted that 26 new school buildings had been erected within the past six years, and that many of these had been planned with an eye to future growth. They also found that the county was beginning to experiment with new educational programs, such as vocational agriculture and domestic science. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book takes an in-depth look at Lane County, Oregon from the vantage point of 1916. Exploring the local economy, public infrastructure, and community life through a variety of lenses, the author considers how lumber, agriculture, physical geography, and immigration converged to shape daily life. Whilst the report was initiated by the Presbyterian Country Church Work, its findings were endorsed by various religious organisations and the University of Oregon across denominational lines. The author discusses the challenges facing Lane County, including poor road conditions, inadequate drainage, and an influx of immigrants, along with notable efforts to address these issues through organisations like the Pomona Grange. The book paints a rich picture of life in the area one hundred years ago, examining how the past informed the present day of its writing, and providing a valuable resource for both historians and modern-day residents. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
