Trade Paperback. Condition: Used - Very Good. 'In 1906 tribal sculpture was ''discovered'' by 20th century artists; these objects had suddenly become relevant because of changes in the nature of modern art itself. These two volumes comprise the first comprehensive scholarly treatment in half a century of the crucial influence of… the tribal arts--particularly those of Africa and Oceania--on modern painters and sculptors. In this visually stunning and intellectually provocative work, 19 essays confront complex aesthetic, art-historical, and sociological problems posed by this dramatic chapter in the history of modern art. The main body of the book contains a series of essays on primitivism in the works of Gauguin, the Fauves, Picasso, Brancusi, the German Expressionists, Lipchitz, Modigliani, Klee, Giacometti, Moore, the Surrealists, and the Abstract Expressionists. It concludes with a discussion of primitivist contemporary artists, including those involved in earthworks, shamanism, and ritual-inspired performances.' Open copy (2-book paperback set with slipcase), light to mild wear on slipcase and on book(s) edges, clean pages, tight binding.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. This is a first edition of a rare book: Modigliani, a folio published by Harry N Abrams as part of its Great Art of the Ages series. It is a collection and short biography of the famed Italian painter and sculptor Amedeo Modigliani (1884-1920). The text is by the French sculptor Jacques L…ipchitz (1891-1973), who was Modigliani's best friend, and a collector of his work. Commentaries are by the Austrian art historian Alfred Werner (1911-1979). The outside of the book has very little shelfwear; the dust jacket is a fitted glassine case. Inside, the book is in excellent condition, although the paper containing the text and black and white images is starting to darken. The binding is not really binding but light stitching. It contains 13 color plates: The Cellist, Caryatid, The Fat Child, Head of Kisling, Portrait of Paul Guillaume, Jacques Lipchitz and His Wife, Portrait of Jean Cocteau, Le Beau Major, Nude on a Cushion, Girl With Braids (also on the cover), Portrait of Lunia Czechowska, Self-Portrait, and Portrait of Jeanne Hebuterne. All of these are can be easily removed and framed--the book is designed for that. Amedeo Modigliani (illustrator).
