Este ensayo describe y evalúa la actitud del marxismo y el socialismo ante las propuestas de una mejora del género humano siguiendo la teoría de la lucha por la existencia de Darwin. El darwinismo social que cabe calificar de académico pretende lograr esa mejora facilitando la reproducción de los hombres más vigorosos e impidiendo la de los débiles, acudiendo a técnicas y medidas políticas centradas en lo biológico. Dentro de esta trayectoria, Galton y Weismann pasan por ser los fundadores de la eugenesia genéticamente argumentada. En cambio, el darwinismo social de cuño socialista formula una mejora de la humanidad centrada no tanto en lo biológico cuanto en lo social, a saber, solicitando un cambio de las deficientes condiciones de vida y de trabajo, a las cuales se achaca la degeneración biológica del hombre, y luchando contra determinadas costumbres sociales, como las sexuales o las del vestir. Para sustentar esta postura y de acuerdo con una tradición específica del movimiento obrero que procede del siglo XVIII, el marxismo acoge la concepción de la evolución de Lamarck, pues ella permite defender que las cualidades adquiridas socialmente son biológicamente transmitidas a la siguientes generaciones. Tomando como punto de partida las teorías de Marx y Engels, a lo largo del ensayo se revisan las propuestas eugenésicas de autores como Kautsky, Goldscheid, Mannerer y Grotjahn, entre otros. La eugenesia socalista estará presente en los proyectos de la primitiva Rusia soviética y en los debates de la Alemania previa al triunfo del nazismo. Por lo demas, algunos de los argumentos aducidos entonces siguen siendo vigentes cuando se desea tomar postura ante las posibilidades que en la actualidad nos ofrece la tenología médica. *** Nota: Los envíos a España peninsular, Baleares y Canarias se realizan a través de mensajería urgente.
