The bibles span a period of over 200 years, from 1663 to 1878. These beautiful pages are from the collection of the noted Americanist, Michael Zinman, who has selected them and written an explanatory text for each, and who provides a preface as well. The original leaves are divided into four groups: bibles in the languages of the natives of America, bibles in English from the 18th and 19th centuries(two portfolios), and bibles in other languages. The first portfolio contains eight leaves, including one from the first bible printed in America, translated into Massachusett(1663), usually called the Eliot Indian bible, and another from the second edition of 1685, as well as significant appearances in Mohawk, Hawaiian, Cherokee, and other languages. The second and third portfolios are the first illustrated bible printed in America(1791), one from Noah Webster's modernization of the bible in English (1833), one from the first Catholic Bible(1790), and one from the first publication of the new Testament in the Confederacy (1862). This section also contains many other important "firsts" relative to the appearance of the Holy Writ in America.
