Age spotting. --- --- McLaverty takes such care to create full images of the surroundings in this beautifully modulated book. What people look like isn't quite as important, so he doesn't mention everybody's hair color and ruddy cheeks. His attention to the landscape and the weather makes it obvious that these things matter, and that surely is true in rural life. More important than his characters' appearances are their dispositions. There is generosity, and there is mean-spiritedness, patience and frustration. Nothing cataclysmic happens. There is no revolution or plague. This is a story about a small neighborhood, with people doing their daily tasks, and some of them prospering more than others, but there is general acceptance and contentment with life, except of course every story needs a conflict, and in this case, the plot turns on the actions of Mrs. Mason. From the start, it's clear that she thinks her neighbors, the Devlins, are beneath her, which doesn't matter except that it means she won't clear the way for her son Ned to marry Mary Devlin. She's unyielding. McLaverty shows us a person who can come to the brink of change and draw back at the last minute, and in the way of human beings, reaps the consequence but learns nothing. This is a lovely read for the skill of the writing, and a compelling read for the simplicity of its truths. It is a quiet, moral tale. . .(A. Mary@Goodreads). . .See photos for additional content. . .
