Thematisch eingebunden ist die Untersuchung in das GTZ-Vorhaben 'Nachhaltige Bewirtschaftung der natürlichen Ressourcen im Departement Santa Cruz'. Sie stellt einen Beitrag zur Charakterisierung der bodenchemischen und physikalischen Veränderungen traditioneller und moderner Landnutzungssysteme im Tiefland Boliviens dar.Ziel der Arbeit ist die agrarökologische Bewertung der Bodenqualität und des Bodennutzungspotentials und die Erfassung der Bodendegradation auf landwirtschaftlich intensiv genutzten Flächen unterschiedlichen Alters innerhalb einer 'falschen Zeitreihe'.Das Untersuchungsgebiet liegt bei 18°08,09' S und 63°02,50' W in den Mennonitenkolonien Riva Palacios und El Dorado (Gnadenhoff). Die Mennoniten sind eine christliche Glaubensgemeinschaft, deren Ursprünge auf Menno Simon (1496-1561) zurück gehen, ausgehend vom niederländischen/ostfriesischen Raum.
