Condition: Very Good. Softcover, 102 pages, b&w and color illustrations. Very light edge wear, else a clean, tight copy. Publication documenting renowned post-modern architect Michael Graves and the summer pavilion for the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. Written by architecture historian and critic Jayne Merkel, the book begins w…ith a history of other outdoor music structures and the decision to build on the river site. Merkel discusses Graves' development as a leader of the post-modern movement and draws upon his sources in ancient amphitheaters, as well as his other structures in Portland, Louisville, and San Juan Capistrano. The book also includes an in-depth interview with Graves and a chapter on the "state of the art" acoustics and the collaboration between architect Graves and artist Ted Schmidt which resulted in the unique cut-out sculptures adorning the roof line of Riverbend. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. 144 pages. The origins of PKSB lie in the firm founded by Giovanni Pasanella in 1964. Pr ogrammatic invention, a base in humanist values, a strong formal presence, and a ttention to urban context characterized the office's work. The present character of the firm derived its direction from Arvid K…lein, who became a partner in 197 5 and maintained the values that continue to guide the work of the firm. Henry S tolzman, an early collaborator with both Pasanella and Klein, became a partner i n 1986, and Wayne Berg became a partner in 1987.The more recent work of P KSB has now come into its own and has received substantial recognition in the fo rm of awards and significant commissions. Because there has been a continuity of values underlying the work of the office in contrast to the disruption of commi tment experienced by the profession at large, we would do well to understand the interaction between the projects, their aesthetic, and these values.-from the I ntroduction by Richard Weinstein.

Hardcover. Condition: As New. 256 pages. One of the world's most celebrated architects at the time of his death at the age of 51, the Finnish-born, American-trained master of Modernism designed and built more than thirty-five buildings in his brief lifetime, and more than thirt y other projects in collaboration with his father a…nd such celebrated architects as Charles Eames and Ralph Rapson. Saarinen's career began in childhood. As the son of renowned architect Eliel Saarinen, designer of Cranbrook Academy in Bloo mfield Hills, Michigan, Eero grew up in an intellectually charged environment su rrounded by art and design. Eero Saarinen trained and practiced with his father until the early 1950s, when he established his own firm and began to design some of the most influential institutions of his day, among them residential college s and a hockey rink at Yale University, an auditorium and chapel at the Massachu setts Institute of Technology, American embassies in London and Oslo, and corpor ate headquarters for General Motors, IBM, and Bell Laboratories. This volume traces Saarinen's life and career from his childhood in Finland to collaboration with his father, through his iconic airport projects of the 1960s, documenting more than sixty commissions and competitions. Extensive illustrations include pe riod photography by Ezra Stoller, Balthazar Korab, and others; rarely seen origi nal sketches, concept drawings, and plans; and more recent color photography.
