Mencke, vormals Offizier der schle…swig-holsteinischen Armee, übernahm 1852 in Hamburg das Atelier von Hermann Biow. Sein 1853 gegründetes Photographisches Institut, führte nach seinem frühen Tod seine Witwe weiter. Nach ihrer Wiederverheiratung 1870 zog sie nach Wandsbek und gründete den "Verlag v. A. Mencke & Co., Wandsbeck b. Hamburg". In umfangreichen Mappenwerken gab dieser vor allem großformatige photographische Ansichten deutscher, österreichischer und baltischer Adelsitze wie hier vorliegend heraus, von denen wohl die meisten dabei erstmals photographisch festgehalten wurden. Alle Aufnahmen mit dieser Firmierung entstanden 1870 oder später und sind Arbeiten angestellter Photographen des Verlages. Am Beginn seiner beruflichen Laufbahn arbeitete kurzzeitig auch der Photograph Cornelius Schaarwächter für diesen Verlag, der später eines der bekanntesten Berliner Ateliers betrieb.
