On one hand, it examines the dramaturgical devices used and the ideological background to the librettos; on the other, it offers insights into the music and its functions, accompanied by a wide range of examples. The model of Metastasian opera is here portrayed in the brilliant splendour of its twilight years, shortly before its definitive decline.
