Trade paperback. Condition: Good. The format is approximately 10.25 inches by 8.25 inches. 384 pages. Illustrated cover. Illustrations (including a fold-out). This work is dedicated to the Semi-Centennial of the Boulder Historical Society and in support of the Boulder Museum of History. The Contents include Four Vignettes, A Bri…ef Biography, Photographs of Ed Tangen, Selected Bibliography, and Index. Ed Tangen took over 16,000 photographs in the Boulder region from 1906 to 1951. For thirty of those years, he lived in a tent at 1942 Water Street (Canyon Boulevard). Capturing the early decades of the twentieth century, his photographs will be cherished for generations to come. Tom Meier, June 23, 1939 March 17, 2023, was a Boulder citizen and third generation Coloradan, After graduating from Denver East High School, Tom served in the United States Marine Corps. He attended CU Boulder. After earning a history degree and teaching certificate, he worked in the University planning office to help bring the Meunzinger instructional complex to fruition. Following his time at CU, Tom owned and operated several successful businesses in Boulder and Broomfield. He served two terms on the City of Boulder Planning Board, working to preserve an enviable quality of life in the Boulder Valley. While Executive Director of the Boulder Museum of History, Tom chronicled the early history of Boulder and surrounding area in a series of articles for the Museum newsletter. His book, Ed Tangen The Pictureman, relates Boulder history through the lens of a forensic photographer. Tom also served as an historian for the Northern Arapaho Tribe. Born in Norway in 1873, Edwin Tangen came to the United States as a child and moved to Boulder from Chicago in 1900. He established a commercial photography studio at 1407 Pearl Street in Boulder, above Kahn's women's clothing store. He maintained his studio at that address during the next five decades. He produced portraits, stereographs, and commercial and press photography. From about 1920 until his death in 1951, he assisted the Boulder County Sheriff with identifications. A bachelor who kept to himself, Tangen enjoyed the mountains and was an avid hiker. He was active with the Rocky Mountain Climbers Club, as was his photographer acquaintance Eben G. Fine. Tangen was a Boulder resident for 51 years. When Edwin Tangen arrived on the Front Range at the turn of the 20th century, he turned his large-format camera lens on Boulder County and never looked away. Upon his death in 1951, the Norwegian-born photographer left behind a trove of more than 16,000 images of the region's people and places from commercial stereographs to panoramic views and slices of everyday life. "Tangen captured a time period in Boulder history. His photographs are invaluable for this reason," Nicole Docimo, archivist at the Carnegie Library for Local History, told the Boulder Reporting Lab. A branch of the Boulder Public Library, the local history archive at 1125 Pine St. is a community resource designed to help residents understand and engage with the past in their own backyard through extensive collections of photographs, assessor's cards, newspaper clippings, genealogy resources and more. It's also home to the Edwin Tangen collection, featuring more than 1,100 digitized images by the prolific local documentarian. Presumed First Paperback Edition, First Printing.
