Der Geologe und Seismologe Prof. Dr. Ludwig Ahorner (1930 2007) leitete insgesamt 35 Jahre lang (bis 1995) die Erdbebenstation Bensberg und die spätere Abteilung für Erdbebengeologie am Geologischen Institut der Universität zu Köln. Nicht zuletzt mit der systematischen Aufbereitung der… historischen und aktuellen Erdbeben-Basisdaten und ihrer kontinuierlichen Pflege in Form eines magnitudenorientierten Erdbebenkatalogs hat Prof. Ahorner für das Erdbebeningenieurwesen und in konkreten Anwendungsaufgaben bleibende Anerkennung erworben. Nach mehrjährigen (in der Anfangsphase von Prof. Ahorner noch begleiteten) Forschungsarbeiten und in Zwischenversionen vorgelegten Überarbeitungen wird der Ahorner-Katalog für die Erdbeben in deutschen und im 50 km Randbereich angrenzenden Gebieten im Zeitfenster der Jahre 880 bis 2013 herausgegeben. Der Katalog ist in drei Teilen aufbereitet. Datengrundlage, Bearbeitungskonzeption und Konversionsbeziehungen zwischen den Stärke- und Herdparametern werden in Teil A bereitgestellt. Teil B enthält in Form der Ereignis- und Parameterlistung den eigentlichen Katalogteil. Er umfasst neben den im ursprünglichen Datensatz von Prof. Ahorner umfassend komplettierten Lokalmagnituden ML auch die Momentenmagnitude MW, den konkreten Bezug zu ihrer Bestimmung sowie Angaben zu den Streubreiten. In Teil C werden die Schüttergebietskarten der maßgeblichen historischen Erdbeben in vektorisierten Datensätzen reproduziert und im GIS-Format aufbereitet. Die makroseismischen Befunde werden nach der Europäischen Makroseismischen Skala 1998 (EMS-98) einheitlich neu bewertet. Die in deutschen Erdbebengebieten vorliegenden Beobachtungen (nicht zuletzt zu den bauwerksbezogenen Schadensgraden) stehen in einer Datenbank koordinatengetreu zur Verfügung und können bei ingenieurtechnischen bzw. Planungsentscheidungen Berücksichtigung finden.
