Add to baskethardcover. Condition: Very Good. Publication: London, Humphrey Milford / Oxford University Press, 1913 Formatting: 8vo, pp. xxxii, 542. Condition Report: Very Good. The publisher's original maroon cloth binding remains fundamentally robust and attractive, though it exhibits expected mild shelf-wear, most notably some minor bumpi…ng and rubbing to the spine extremities and board corners. The spine has gently sun-faded to a slightly duller hue than the front and rear boards, a typical occurrence for this cloth dye, yet the gilt titling remains perfectly sharp and legible. The text block is tight and square, featuring traditional untrimmed, deckled page edges that show natural age-toning and slight dust-darkening. Internally, the pages are largely crisp and clean, with only occasional scattered spotting, most prominent on the endpapers and as faint offsetting to the title page from the frontispiece. The hinges are sound and secure, making this a highly presentable and structurally tight copy. Catalogue Note: This is the expanded 'New Edition' of Thomas Medwin's seminal biography of his cousin, Percy Bysshe Shelley, originally issued in the mid-nineteenth century. Crucially, this volume was printed from a copy 'copiously amended and extended by the Author and left unpublished at his death,' featuring an extensive introduction and rigorous scholarly commentary by the eminent literary editor H. Buxton Forman, C.B. Formanâs critical intervention successfully corrects many of the author's chronological errors and restores the biography's authority, effectively making this the definitive text of the work. The volume is complete with a beautifully reproduced frontispiece portrait of Shelley. While early printings occasionally surface, this comprehensive revised edition, especially retained in its original publisher's cloth, is uncommonly encountered on the open market and represents a significant cornerstone for any serious collection of Romantic-era literary history. An intimate, primary-source portrait of one of the greatest Romantic poets, written by his cousin and schoolmate. This definitive revised edition incorporates the author's lifelong, previously unpublished revisions, meticulously introduced and annotated by H. Buxton Forman. From Shelleyâs controversial expulsion from Oxford and his radical philosophies to his tragic drowning in Italy, the narrative offers a deeply personal account of the poetâs revolutionary life and complex relationships. This biography captures the fiery genius and tumultuous existence of Percy Bysshe Shelley as only a close confidant could, remaining essential reading for anyone captivated by the Romantic era.
