Hardcover. Presumed First UK Edition. pp. 293, [1]. Royal 8vo., measuring 6" x 9.25". Publisher's original bright-red cloth over boards, gilt lettering to the spine. Cloth extremities remarkably well-preserved showing only light bumping to the spine-ends, contents equally without blemish with clean, and unmarked pages and firm, sound binding; near fine and housed in original, unclipped, dustjacket (bearing original price of 40s.) showing light wear along the edges of the panels (now housed in protective mylar cover). Overall, very good+. The Gutenberg Galaxy is concerned with that association of cultural and political events which, from the origins of phonetic literacy to the development of typography, have shaped the Western individual and society. The translation of tribal man into his Western form is shown to have occurred by the agency of phonetic literacy alone. One theme of this book, therefore, is the contemporary transformation of the East into individual forms even while the West is being reconfigured into collective forms by the magic of electro-magnetic waves. Literacy, in translating man out of the closed world of tribal depth and resonance, gave man an eye for an ear and ushered him into a visual open world of specialised and divided consciousness. The individual versus the state, thought versus feeling, art versus commerce, and science versus humanism are the most familiar of the schizoidal states which we recognize as the inevitable legacy of literacy in any culture or in any period of history.

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Scarce inaugural issue of this journal Dot Zero which contains work and essays on the nature of design and visual communication from some of the best thinkers of the time, including Herbert Bayer, Bruno Munari, Marshall Mcluhan and others in this issue. Generally excellent condition, the interior being quite fresh, bright, and clean. The bindin is quite solid and sturdy. The white covers with embossed circle designs are unevenly toned around the edges and have some rubbng and dust soiling that is to be expected - but they are now covered in custom cut mylar and should stay free of further soiling. The back has one long diagonal line of discoloration that may be from the nature of its storage. There is a shallow but pronounced crease to the back cover as well and a teeny tiny chip to the paper at the very bottom of the back cover. Altogether quite attractive still.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Included. 1st Edition. 4to. pp. vii, [1], 157. text in double columns. profusely illus. cloth. dw. (dw. rubbed & with few chips & tears in upper edge, the book itself in very good condition). First Edition of McLuhan s penetrating study in the field of popular culture and the persuasive influence of communication media independent of content. McLuhan s aphorism "the medium is the message" is later elaborated in his Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man (1964). "Ours is the first age in which many thousands of the best-trained individual minds have made it a full-time business to get inside the collective public mind. To get inside in order to manipulate, exploit, control is the object now. And to generate heat not light is the intention. To keep everybody in the helpless state engendered by prolonged mental rutting is the effect of many ads and much entertainment alike." (Preface).

First edition, first impression, inscribed by the author; 4to; b&w illustrations throughout, some age-toning to text block, else unmarked internally; publisher's black cloth, titles to spine and upper cover in white, some rubbing to extremities, in the original unclipped dust-jacket, a couple of closed tears to front panel, rubbing and creasing to corners and extremities, else very good. Presentation copy of the author's first book, inscribed by the author in blue ink on the front free endpaper: 'For Joan Rosengren / from Marshall McLuhan'. Treating newspapers, comics, and advertisements as poetic texts, McLuhan shows how sex was first used to sell industrial hardware, how Orphan Annie still keeps the world on track, and how an Arabian Nights wonderland of mass entertainment and suggestion makes information irrelevant, and sends us to bed at night too dazed to question whether we're happy or not.

First Edition of McLuhan's first book, a pioneering study of the effects of the communication media and advertising on public consciousness and behaviour. McLuhan coined the expression 'the medium is the message' and the term 'global village' and predicted the World Wide Web almost thirty years before it was invented. The title of this work was derived from a piece by Dadaist artist, Marcel Duchamp.
