Hardcover. Condition: Fair. 1898, William Jolly & Sons, Aberdeen. 161pp. A description of the river from the wells to the sea and illustrated by JG Murray. All pages present. Approximately 91 illustrations. Apart from a slice taken off the top of the title page, probably to remove a previous owner's name, the contents are in goo…d condition. The bindings have general wear, particularly down the right hand or leading edge of the front cover. The gold thistle decoration is still clearly visible but the title is a bit faded. Back cover is in better condition. However there is a small piece of wear in the middle of the spine at the back cover, about 2cm plus the spine is split by about 6cm up the back cover from the bottom. There is no looseness to the bindings and the whole is still a good tight volume. 20cm x 26cm.

Soft cover. Condition: New. New Edition. New cloth-covered paperback book in mint condition. New edition published by Deeside Books, pp 12, xii, 84, map to rear, index. Ben Muich Dhui and his Neighbours is one of the earliest and scarcest of Alex Inkson McConnochie's publications and its printing in 1885 makes it a forerunner of… the guide books used by today's hillwalkers. This book outlines the different routes across the Cairngorms along with the best ways of obtaining access, as well as the author providing vivid descriptions of the local scenery. The sport of hillwalking was still in its infancy in the latter part of the 19th century but was becoming ever more popular through the ease of travel brought about by the coming of the railways to the highland parts of Scotland. Further publicity to the area was also given by Queen Victoria's extensive travels on both Deeside and Speyside, which were then later published in Leaves from a Highland Journal. This book has been reproduced in its original form and also includes a copy of the original fold-out map as per the first printing. However, this small scale map does have limitations, and a summary of the modern Ordnance Survey maps that cover the various parts of the Cairngorms has also been included. A new introduction has been added which contains both a brief biography of McConnochie and also a comparison of this book with some of his later publications. Ben Muich Dhui and his Neighbours is the sixth volume in the North-east Scotland Classics Series.

Soft cover. Condition: New. 2nd Edition. New paperback with card covers that have a cloth veneer in order to retain the original character of the book as much as possible. In mint condition. Republished from the original edition of 1902, with a new introduction by Bryn Wayte of Deeside Books. Pp 181, with original full page illu…strations and five maps, advertising and index. Number five in the North East Classics Series. Originally published in 1902, this scarce title by Alex Inkson McConnochie has been reproduced in its original form, including copies of all of the original illustrations and maps. It is the fifth volume in the North-east Scotland Classics Series and a new introduction has been added which it is hoped will help the reader elicit more information, particularly where more modern maps are concerned.McConnochie was a prominent local historian and hillwalker and the author of numerous books, articles and guides on both the Aberdeenshire and Cairngorm areas, and indeed, was one of the founder members of The Cairngorm Club. He was born at Rothes on Speyside in 1850 and in later life was an accountant and law stationer living in Aberdeen, so obviously the North-east of Scotland was his native land. The reasons for Speyside's popularity are probably then as now - its outstanding scenery coupled with numerous facilities for outdoor pursuits. The coming of the railways to the northern part of Scotland in the latter part of the 19th century opened up vast areas to the tourist and sportsman, and Speyside was a popular destination. The history and topography of the complete length of the valley of the Spey are covered in great detail, as are its tributary rivers, particularly the Fiddich and the Avon. McConnochie gives a vivid description of both the local habitat and also the legends of the area as well as contemporary descriptions of a way of life that has now largely disappeared.Shop shelf.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is a captivating journey through the heart of Scotland, following the course of the River Dee from its source in the Cairngorms to its mouth at the North Sea. The author's passionate prose guides the reader through a landscape of dramatic peaks, wild glens, and turbulent wate…rs, illuminating the history, folklore, and natural beauty of this iconic region. The book blends meticulous observation of the river's environment with rich historical detail, drawing on centuries of local lore and accounts by notable travelers and writers, including the naturalist John Macgillivray and the poet Lord Byron. The author weaves together vivid descriptions of the Dee's physical features ââ â its waterfalls, pools, and rapids ââ â with captivating tales of the region's inhabitants, from ancient clans to the Victorian aristocracy who sought solace in its wild grandeur. Through the river's changing character, the author reveals the enduring power of nature, the fragility of traditional Highland life, and the enduring allure of Scotland's unspoiled beauty. This book is a must-read for anyone seeking an immersive experience of Scotland's wild heart. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
