Magazine. Condition: Near Fine. (Vol. 6, No. 1). [nice clean copy, subscription mailing label at lower right-hand corner of front cover, but no significant wear]. (photographs, ads, graphics) Mid-run issue of this L.A.-centric magazine, subtitled on the cover "The Talk of Los Angeles." (Except that mostly, it wasn't.) The cover story is an interview with actress Susan Sarandon, entitled "The Anti-Star." Also in this issue: "The L.A. Decade," an article positing Los Angeles as "undeniably center stage for the ultimate fin de siècle experience -- the end of not just a century but a millennium"; an article about the bar where the city's political movers and shakers hang out (); "Mantra of the Moment," an article about Deepak Chopra's successful repackaging of ancient Hindu folk medicine, then "the rage of the New Age crowd" (whatever happened to them, anyway?); and "The Good Cop," a profile by William Murray of ex-copy Steven Julian, who blew the whistle on the LAPD's beating of a burglary suspect and the subsequent cover-up of same.

hardcover. Condition: Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.

First edition.8vo. pp ix + 206 + maps + black and white photographs. Black cloth hardcover with pictorial dust jacket. A fine copy. When the Germans invaded Belgium in 1940, Gaston was 19. He and a small group of friends left home to join the army. With no money, and their only food supplied by villagers who had little themselves, they shuttle from French city to town in search of the remains of the Belgian army. Failing in his attempt to join the army, or to get to London, Gaston began his incredible career in the underground. Trying to be a Courier, he began his exploits carrying messages and money across the Pyrenees. Information was destined for England; money for the resistance. By mid 1942 he was known as Raymond and then Rinus and at the top of the gestapo's wanted list. But quick action and safe houses kept him free. At the behest of queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands, Gaston or Rinus organised the dashed underground network known as Wim and was in charge of a network of close to 2000 spies.
