El Cardenal Raúl Silva Henríquez jugó un papel protagónico en difíciles momentos de la historia de Chile. Su alma de pastor y de patriota lo condujo a buscar con inusitada convicción el camino del diálogo y de la paz, en momentos en que la patria se encontraba polarizada y dividida en trincheras irreconciliables. En los complejos meses previos al golpe militar, el Presidente Allende solicita a don Raúl que mediara a fin de poder reunirse con Eduardo Frei Montalva, quien en esos momentos era Presidente del Senado y jefe de la oposición. Don Raúl acepta el encargo y le dice a Frei que Allende quería conversar con él en privado y que tal reunión se podría hacer en la casa del Cardenal. Frei estaba renuente a reunirse con Allende, puesto que tenía buenas razones para no hacerlo, y así, después de meditar unos segundos, responde lentamente: "Don Raúl, si usted me lo pide como católico, yo debo decir que sí, porque usted es mi pastor, pero si me lo pide como político, debo decir que no". El Cardenal sin titubear ningún segundo le dice: "Se lo pido como católico". Frei guardó silencio, y entonces don Raúl, motivado por su vehemente deseo de impedir la confrontación y el golpe militar, argumenta: "Si yo tuviera que analizar cuál gobierno ha sido más cristiano en su cercanía con los pobres, si el anterior (Frei M.) o el actual (Allende), me costaría elegir.". Posteriormente don Raúl señaló en sus Memorias: "Estuve mucho tiempo arrepentido por eso que dije. Supe que había herido a Frei como nunca antes y que él debió hacer un gran esfuerzo para creer en mi buena fe". El Cardenal tenía el convencimiento que los políticos debían cuidar la democracia y evitar el golpe militar. Como podemos apreciar en este libro, el Cardenal no tuvo éxito en ese empeño y Chile sufrió la ruptura de su convivencia democrática con graves y dolorosas consecuencias. Lengthily INSCRIBED and SIGNED on the half-title page by Fidel Castro to Lieutenant Pedro García Peláez sending him this book in acknowledgment of his birthday and the wars that they have fought in together. The lieutenant would later become General Pedro García Pelaez, a top military aide to Castro, the head of the Cuban Military Mission in Angola, and the Chief of Combat Readiness. In 1959 he was head of the personal escort of Commander in Chief Fidel Castro. Though not dated, this was likely inscribed close to publication. Books signed by Castro are scarce, and this is a specially interesting example. Born in the Dominican Republic, Maximo Gomez was Cuba's military commander in that country's War of Independence (1895-1898) and a hero of the struggle which ended Spanish domination over Cuba. He refused the presidential nomination offered to him in 1901, which he was expected to win unopposed, mainly because he always disliked politics, and after 40 years of living in Cuba he still felt that, being Dominican-born, he should not be the civil leader of Cuba.
