Es ist dies weltweit die einzige Puppen-Stadt. Die früh verwitwete Fürstin Auguste Dorothea zu Schwarzburg-Arnstadt, gebürtig aus dem Hause Braunschweig, widmete dieser Idee zwischen etwa 1700 und ihrem Tod 1751 den größten Teil ihres Vermögens, weswegen sie hoch verschuldet starb. In dieser Puppenstadt fehlt keiner: In achtzig Räumen sind vom Bettler über die vielen Handwerker, Dienstleister und Gaukler bis zum höfischen Personal sowie Klerus und Klosterschwestern, ja bis zu den Tieren alle vertreten. Und das auch mit all ihrem charakteristischen Zubehör, Kleidung, Einrichtung, Gerätschaften, Sachen. Etliche hier vertretene Berufe sind inzwischen ausgestorben, viele Gerätschaften längst vergessen. Besondere Bewunderung der Betrachter erregen vor allem die winzigen Keramiken und Metall-Geräte aller Art sowie die oft hölzernen Maschinen wie Webstühle, Drehstühle oder die Musikinstrumente, aber auch die vielerlei Kleidungsstücke oder Köpfe der Puppen. Nicht zu vergessen die zum Teil kostbare Raum-Ausstattung mit Stuck, bemalten Tapeten, Mini-Gobelins, und die Möbel einfachster bis kostbarster Machart. Eine wissenschaftlich brauchbare und verläßliche Monographie über die Puppenstadt hat bisher ebenso gefehlt wie eine populäre Darstellung, die sich nicht an ein Spezialpublikum wendet. Der Direktor des Schloßmuseums zu Arnstadt in Thüringen, Matthias Klein, legt hier unter Mitarbeit einer früheren Kollegin dieses Desiderat vor. Über Voraussetzungen und Geschichte der Puppenstadt wird dabei ebenso berichtet wie über die Herstellung und Beschaffenheit der Puppen selbst.
