New scientific theories, especially in the fields of biology, ethol…ogy, and ecology, together with recent scientific discoveries demonstrating how human activities are jeopardizing ecosystem services urge for a paradigmatic change in our moral convictions. Environmental ethics has taken up the challenge and opened an extremely urgent and inspiring call for philosophical research. This is the call for extending the moral community to non-human and non-paradigmatic entities, regarding them as moral patients. The main aim of this book is to analyze the possibility and the legitimacy of a non-anthropocentric environmental ethic. In pursuing this aim, I primarily demonstrate the possibility and need to extend the status of moral patient beyond the ideal paradigmatic human being. I also provide an original categorization of several theoretical projects that have been proposed in the last few decades. Secondly, this book comprises a constructive critique of the most significant moral theories debated in the field and outlines a personal theoretical proposal for a new environmental ethic. My claim is that the refusal of ethical and ontological supremacy of human beings is not only necessary, but also sufficient to set the foundation for a formally and materially valid ethical system. Even without abandoning the most accepted forms of moral epistemology, it is nonetheless possible to admit the need to respect different kinds of non-human and non-paradigmatic moral patients. Libro.

Nonostante il termine 'ecofemminismo' (dal francese écoféminisme) sia stato coniato solo nel 1974 da Françoise d'Eaubonne, il movimento ecofemminista si propone sin dagli anni '60 del secolo scorso di… indagare le connessioni esistenti tra il sessismo e altre due forti espressioni del dominio umano: l'abuso delle risorse naturali e la discriminazione degli animali non-umani. I tre fenomeni sono per certi versi visti come così interconnessi (concettualmente, storicamente, socialmente e politicamente), da non potere essere né adeguatamente compresi se non congiuntamente, né affrontati se non in un unico blocco. Ciò che l'ecofemminismo sottolinea è che, in un mondo caratterizzato dalla supremazia maschile, donne, ambiente e animali non-umani appartengono a categorie profondamente affini, considerate infatti per secoli come 'proprietà animate' o 'beni mobili' del tutto analoghi. Per affrontare la questione ambientale e quella animale non è dunque sufficiente riposizionare la vita umana in termini naturali e la natura in termini etici. Ciò che occorre è smascherare le premesse stesse dell'oppressione e, una volta superata ogni forma di dualismo gerarchizzante, promuovere una visione relazionale della realtà capace di supportare, anche tramite espedienti tipici della narrativa, un'etica simpatetica da affiancare a quella più tradizionale. Chiunque conviva convissuto con un cane, un gatto o un qualsiasi altro animale da compagnia resterebbe stupito di fronte ad una simile domanda, e risponderebbe senza…esitazione "ma certo!". Per molti la questione non è così pacifica: quelle degli animali non-umani dicono - sono semplici reazioni istintive, dovute all'abitudine e al training e non hanno nulla a che fare con le vere emozioni che sono soltanto le nostre, quelle umane. Le emozioni infatti sono moti dell'anima, presuppongono consapevolezza di sé, autocoscienza e un grado di complessità e di sensibilità sconosciuto agli animali di qualunque specie non-umana. Ma anche le emozioni umane non è poi detto che abbiano sempre goduto di una buona stampa, perché sono considerate irrazionali in grado di obnubilare il nostro raziocinio e di trascinarci fuori dalla retta via, che è quella del ragionamento, delle decisioni prese con calma. Nel contrasto ragione-emozione la risposta tradizionale va tutta a favore della prima. Le emozioni rappresentano un po' il nostro lato profondo, complicato, che conosciamo ancora poco: come possiamo pensare di attribuirle anche agli animali non-umani. Libro.

Lo stesso Dalai Lama ha recentemente (1993) definito il buddhismo «a science of mind», una scienza della mente.Uscendo da categorie prettamente occidentali (europee soprattutto), quali 'religione' e 'filosofia', può essere maggiormente comprensibile come tali concetti siano inapplicabili alla cultura orientale, dove la religione, la metafisica e la morale si compenetrano, differenziandosi solamente per il tipo di salvezza promesso, generalmente intesa come liberazione da uno stato o da una condizione non desiderata, e per le modalità del suo conseguimento.Sia il buddhismo originale che la psicologia rappresentano una teoria sulla natura dell'uomo, e al contempo una prassi finalizzata al conseguimento del suo benessere, inteso, nelle parole di Erich Fromm, come un «essere in armonia con la propria natura». Il primo è un'espressione caratteristica del pensiero orientale, mentre la seconda del pensiero occidentale. Il buddhismo fonde la razionalità e la capacità di astrazione proprie della cultura indiana, mentre la psicologia ha le sue basi nella sapienza greca e nell'etica ebraica.
