Edizione originale rara in fresco esemplare di questo importante saggio di natura giuridica e sociale, opera del Mattei, avvocato ma, soprattutt…o letterato, storico della musica e musicista, nato a Montepaone (Catanzaro). Autore di una importante traduzione poetica dei Salmi biblici e di cantate in musica, fu molto apprezzato dal Galiani e da Bernardo Tanucci. Fu al centro anche di polemiche sul primato della musica antica su quella moderna, fortemente inflluenzato su questi argomenti dal Gravina e da Vico. Accanto a questa attività letteraria dovette esercitare l'avvocatura per vivere. Ottenne anche incarici amministrativi (fu avvocato fiscale della giunta delle Poste) e pubblicò diverse opere di carattere giuridico tra le quali questa, stampata nello stesso anno anche a Venezia. Il Paradosso ebbe il Permesso Regio e faceva proprie le diffuse esigenze di riforma giudiziaria, in particolare per la giustizia militare, che seguirono alla pubblicazione delle opere del Beccaria. Mattei, propenso ad una monarchia temperata, vede nella giustizia non una funzione punitiva ma l'utilità della punizione stessa: la morte giova all'ucciso? giova all'uccisore? giova allo stato? (.) perchè dopo perduto un cittadino, ne farem perdere un'altro? . L'opera rappresenta anche un segno dell'influenza che ebbe, in particolare in Italia, l'emanazione del Codice Leopoldino, pubblicato il 30 novembre 1786, nel quale si aboliva pena di morte e tortura e che il Mattei inserì a margine di questa sua importante operetta come esempio del buon operare di un sovrano illuminato. Schönes lateinisch-italienisches marianisches Stundenbuch mit einer Einführung des Literaten, Juristen und Musikwissenschaftlers Saverio Mattei (1742-1795), der einige Jahre zuvor die hebräischen Psalmen ins Italienische übertragen hatte. Mit doppelblattgroßer gedruckter Widmung der Gebrüder Pazzini an Maria Ludovica von Spanien (1745-1792), die durch ihre Heirat mit dem späteren Kaiser Leopold II. österreichische Erzherzogin und Großherzogin der Toscana wurde. Die mit "Typis Pazzini Carli" bezeichneten Tafeln zeigen überwiegend Szenen aus dem Leben Marias.
