Dernièr…e édition latine de "la Gaule française", un des textes majeurs de la philosophie politique du XVIe siècle. "La Francogallia (Genève, Jacob Stoer, 1573) est incontestablement l'un des textes les plus importants parus pendant les guerres civiles en France. Il a immédiatement connu un grand succès [.]. Jurisconsulte exerçant à l'université de Bourges puis à Genève, [Hotman] est bien connu des milieux juridiques pour ses travaux sur le droit féodal. Protestant, il a été le secrétaire de Calvin pendant quelques mois après son premier exil en 1548 et a rédigé des pamphlets contre les Guises [.]. Historien, il est devenu historiographe du roi sur recommandation de Michel de L'Hospital au milieu des années 1560. [.] La Francogallia est publiée pour la première fois en 1573, c'est-à-dire quelques mois seulement après la Saint-Barthélemy (août-octobre 1572). Le texte s'inscrit dans un contexte de publication d'ouvrages de réflexion politique et théologique, notamment ceux que William Barclay a qualifiés de façon critique de « monarchomaques » [.].
