Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. The First English Edition of Augustin Marlorat's commentary on Matthew, which formed part of his wider project to compile and harmonise Protestant interpretations of Scripture. Rather than composing an entirely original work, Marlorat created catena-style expositions, drawing together and paraphr…asing insights from leading Reformers such as Calvin, Bullinger, Musculus, and Peter Martyr. His aim was to produce a clear, continuous explanation of the text that distilled the best of Reformed thought for pastors and lay readers. The commentary on Matthew first appeared in Latin as Commentarius in Evangelium Matthaei, and was later translated into English by Thomas Timme. Published in London in 1570 under the title A Catholike and Ecclesiastical Exposition of the Holy Gospel after S. Matthew, it became a valuable resource for English Protestants, especially among Puritan circles, offering a concise and accessible synthesis of continental Reformed exegesis on the first Gospel. Folio (280 x 200mm) Description Collates [8], 446, 446-758, [7] pp Lacks a blank, one prelim leaf and the final table leaf only. Textually complete. Engraved title with some marginal wear. Early ink annotations to the top right margin of the title dated 1590. Verso of title with extensive contemporary MS notes. Occasional small contemporary marginal notes in the text. Minor light marks or blemishes. LII3 & LII4 towards close are bound in reverse order. Last couple of quires with minor wormholes. Contemporary full leather boards. Author Augustin Marlorat (1506-1562) was ''orphaned at the age of eight and placed in an Augustinian monastery, where he took his vows in 1524. He acquired a good knowledge of the Fathers and of scholastic theology and was soon famous as preacher. He converted to the Reformation while he was prior at Bourges and was called to preach the new doctrines at Bourges, Poitiers, and Angers. Fleeing persecution, he went first to Geneva, then to Lausanne, where he was put in charge of the parish of Crissier in 1549. Ten years later, when he was pastor at Vevey, he was called back by the Genevan consistory and sent to Paris. In 1560, he presided over the provincial synod of Dieppe while pastor at Rouen and attended the colloquy of Poissy. He died in the same year, a victim of the Roman Catholic authorities, who ordered his hanging in front of the church of Notre-Dame at Rouen on 30 October 1561.'' Add to basket(8) 530 (26) p. Rebound half Leather with raised bands, Folio (Text-block very slightly browned. Provenance: From the library of Nicolaas Barkey (1709-1788) with his name written on the titlepage. Exegetical commentary on the book of Isaiah by French Reformer and martyr Augustine Marlorat (1506-1562). Marlorat ministered to a nu…mber of congregations and represented the French Protestants at the Colloquy of Poissy in 1561 together with Beza and Vermigli in debate against the Roman Catholic theologians from the Sorbonne. His works were chiefly commentaries on the Holy Scriptures, some of them published after his death. He also prepared the indices for Calvin's Institutes and is greatly known for the marginal notes and arguments which were used in the New Testament of later Deux Aes translations of the Bible. Derived from Marlorat's works they had to replace Luther's marginal notes to give the Bible a more calvinistic character. Marlorat's Expositiones are mostly literal compilations, put together on the same model. Each chapter and verse is commented by selected passages or phrases from some ancient but most contemporary commentators. The passages are identified by initials to which Marlorat himself provides the key at the end of the prelims. For this volume on Isaiah he used the comments of Oecolampadius, Zwingli, Luther, Pellikan, Calvin, Musculus, Vatable and himself. Illustrated with a large woodcut portrait of the author on the titlepage.).

Augustin Marlorat (1506-1563) was a French Protestant divine during the French wars of religion. Marlorat began his religious life with the Augustinian friars, but was offended by their licentiousness. Around 1540 he left the Roman Catholic church and fled to Switzerland. He served as a corrector of the press at Geneva and became an important Protestant pastor. After the fall of Rouen (1562), Marlorat was imprisoned and executed for treason by Charles IX. He was charged for being a "seducer of the people" and hanged in front of the church in which he preached. See Chalmers. The first edition of Marlorat's Novi Testamenti was published in 1561. This is the fourth edition. This work was also translated into English in 1575. An early Huguenot commentary on the New Testiment, specifically on the Gospel of John. Translated partial title: "The New Shell of the Catholic Mind, an Ecclesiastical Exposition of Approved Theologians, Whom the Lord of the Church Has Given to the Various Groups." ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Augustin Marlorat was a French Protestant reformer (1506-1562) placed in an Augustinian…monastery at the age of eight. He approved the rigidly Calvinistic procedure of excommunication and resigned after a brief time in Geneva as pastor of an Evangelical congregation. Upholding the Protestant Church's petition to Charles IX in 1560 and a later petition to Catharine de'Medici, he was chosen as a spokesman of the Protestants. Ultimately, Marlorat was executed on a treason charge in 1562. (Wikipedia). CONDITION: Large volume (16"x10"x4") hardbound in leather with cover graphics and hubbed leather spine with title. A very good minus copy bound in contemporary vellum boards with faint but early ink title to the spine. The front endpaper worn, tired, creased and with a hole in it. The preliminary blank page also creased and dust soiled with a small ho…le in it with some quite faded but contemporary or near contemporary ownership annotations. Some creasing and dust soiling to the title page - not heavy as it has been protected by the previous two leaves. Several charming woodcut headpieces and tailpieces. Only one of 5 cords (the one at the head) holding to the front vellum board so the textblock partially sprung at the front. The two rear endpapers creased and dust-soiled. Some light staining with tide-marks - chiefly to the leading fore-edges and a few other soil marks but essentially allowing for its great age the text block remains largely clean. A charming copy of a scarce publication.
