Cloth. Condition: Good. None (illustrator). First edition. An uncommon, first edition of this memoir from poet and pacifist, Max Plowman, written under the pseudonym of Mark VII. First edition. Bound in the publisher's original cloth, with red motif to the front cover. Lacking the dust wrapper. This First World War memoir documents the experiences of British writer and pacifist Max Plowman, who wrote this particular work under the pseudonym of Mark VII. Plowman was morally opposed to fighting, calling it "insane and unmitigated filth", although signed up for the Royal Army Medical Corps. During his time on the Western Front, Plowman suffered concussion and shellshock, spending the remainder of the war as a conscientious objector. This work presents Plowman's memories from July 1916 to January 1917. With a previous owners ink inscription 'To Dearest Kenneth from Patricia' dated 1927. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally good, with damp staining to the cloth and the occasional tear. Hinges are slightly strained but holding firm. Light offsetting to endpapers, with an ink inscription to the front. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean, with light spotting to the fore edge. Good. book.

Original publisher's black cloth, lettered red at the spine with a field punishment symbol on the front cover. Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. London: J. M. Dent. 1927. 8vo. First edition, first printing. Publisher's black cloth lettered in red to the spine, in the dust jacket designed by Kenneth Romney Towndrow. An about very good copy overall, the cloth rubbed at the corners, tips, and some edges, with small nick to the front panel centre, and some persistent stains to this front board. Binding tight and gently rolled. Despite some offsetting to endpapers, the contents generally fine throughout, with the author's real name written in ink below his pseudonym at title page. The dust jacket unclipped (5s net), the spine quite heavily toned and creased, the joints rubbed and toned also, with some rubbing to all corners and edges. Small stains elsewhere, but a largely presentable copy of the scarce first printing. A pacifist's journal of 'the chaos, the terror, the dirt, the unspeakable din' of the First World War from July 1916 to the end of the Battle of the Somme. Plowman reluctantly volunteered to the Army Medical Corps in 1914, later serving with the 10th Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment but becoming increasingly concerned with the morality of warfare. After being treated for shell-shock, he resigned his post but was dismissed by the army, successfully exempting himself as a conscientious objector. The Western Front action described here formed the pacifism that would be instilled in the Adelphi Centre and magazine founded by John Middleton Murry, which brought together the likes of Plowman, George Orwell, D. H. Lawrence, Jack Common, and many others. The dust jacket, by Kenneth Romney Towndrow, represents one of only a small handful of jacket commissions, all of which are captivating. The book sold well with numerous impressions and an American edition. This first printing is scarce.
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Important and acclaimed account. of experiences on bthe Somme. The author Max Plowrman became a pacifist after the war. This 1927 first English edition has the powerful field punishment image in red on the black cloth boards. 241pp., some foxing and a few minor blemishes, else a very nice copy.

First Edition
First edition, in the scarce jacket, of one of the most significant Great War books. "His account of a spell in the half-formed line between Lesboeufs and Gueudecourt in the all-pervading mud of that dreadful winter. is as vivid as anything that has been written about the Somme fighting" (Falls). Plowman (1883-1941) signed up despite deep moral misgivings about the rightness of war. Invalided out from the western front, he was treated for shell shock and refused to rejoin his unit in 1918. Tried and dismissed from the army, he became an active member of the Peace Pledge Union and edited the New Adelphi, striking up a close friendship with Orwell, whose contributions he encouraged. His is "one of the most important memoirs of disillusionment" (Lengel). Falls, p. 217; Lengel 790. Octavo. Original black cloth, spine lettered in red, "Field Punishment Number One" device in red on front cover, top edge red. With dust jacket. Slight lean to spine, light marking to cloth, damp stains on top edge, intruding into upper margin of endleaves; jacket unclipped, damp stains, short closed tear at head of front panel: a very good copy in like jacket.
