Die in Mittelamerika und einigen Gebieten Südamerikas weit verbreitete Marimba, ein Holz-Xylophon, kam erst mit den afrikanischen Sklaven dorthin, angebliche Belege für vorkolumbianische Xylophon-Instrumente sind wissenschaftlich sehr umstritten. Im Schmelztiegel der verschiedenen Ethnien entwickelten sich unterschiedliche Spieltraditionen, die aber meist auf bestimmte regionale Gebiete oder Bevölkerungsgruppen, meist afro-amerikanischer oder indigener Herkunft, beschränkt blieben. Neben Mexiko (hier meist Marimba-Gruppen bzw. -Orchester im Süden des Landes) gibt es lebendige Marimba-Musik in Guatemala (dort das Nationalinstrument), Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Belize, Kolumbien und Equador. In Brasilien hat sich eine heute beinahe erloschene Marimba-Tradition der Caiçara (einer ethnisch nicht genau fassbaren Bevölkerungsgruppe) erhalten, während sie in Ländern wie Peru, Puerto Rico und vielleicht auch Kuba, zwar historisch belegt, aber heute ausgestorben ist. Sehr beliebt ist das Instrument auch in Japan, wo sich allerdings erst im 20. Jahrhundert eine ganz eigene Marimbakultur entwickelte. Dort sind Joe und George Hamilton Green als Instrumentalisten angegeben, laut "Eyler, The History and development of the Marimba Ensemble in the United States and Its Current Status in College and University Percussion Programs" (1985), S. 57-60 versteckt sich hinter dem Bandnamen aber eigentlich die Hurtado Brothers Royal Marimba Band aus Guatemala, die bei verschiedenen Plattenfirmen Aufnahmen machte und dabei wie damals oft üblich verschiedenene Bandnamen verwandte: "Tracing the history of recordings of marimba groups like the Hurtado Brother Royal Marimba Band is difficult because, customarily, as a group changed recording companies, the name used by the group would also change. The Hurtado Brothers[.] shortened their name to "Royal Marimba Band" when recording on Columbia Records in 1915-16 and again in 1927. On the Regal and Romeo Labels of 1930, the Royal Marimba Band was a pseudonym for the Dixie Marimba Players.
