Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. This new book examines the career and works of Mrs Henry [Ellen] Wood [nee Ellen Strand Price, 1814-87), the author of the enormously successful and sensational mid-Victorian bestseller: East Lynne (1861), and many others. / Thomas Seccombe's DNB notice of Mrs. Wood in 1900 said that The Channings had sold 200,000 by 1898; The Shadow of Ashlydyat (1863) had reached its 150th thousand, and her other titles were continuing to sell strongly up to the second world war of 1939-45. East Lynne, her most famous novel, sold more than 1 million copies and Danesbury House sold 100,000 copies in her lifetime. / Such a prolific novelist who enjoyed literary success and fame during her life, Wood dwindled to a minor literary figure in the following century as a consequence of fin-de-siecle changing literary tastes. However, in recent years, Wood has become the object of renewed scholarly interest but attention is still mostly paid to East Lynne. As Professor Costantini now shows, what is needed is a wider exploration of her oeuvre as well as a reflection on some elusive aspects of her professional figure. / Wood shunned publicity and led a quiet family life despite the important role she played in the Victorian print industry. In ways similar to her life, her oeuvre still challenges interpretation as it perplexingly combines sensationalism with domestic ideals. By reading Wood through the lens of feminist theory, this book sheds new light onto relevant aspects of her career and personality. The book is devoted to the complexities of her fiction. It ascertains the extent to which her generic experiments and characterisation convey a subtle critique of gender roles intertwined with seemingly reassuring images of domesticity. / Contents: Introduction. Ch.1: The necessity and traps of Victorian marriage; Ch. 2: Variations of the Griselda theme; Ch. 3: Desiring subjects and the effects of immoderacy; Ch.4: The transgressive lady and the failings of patriarchy; Ch.5: Unconventional low-class women; Bibliography. Mrs Henry [Ellen] Wood, such a prolific novelist who enjoyed literary success and fame during her life, dwindled to a minor literary figure in the following century. What is needed is a wider exploration of her oeuvre as well as a reflection on some elusive aspects of her professional figure. Softcover, 23 cm. Condition: Sehr gut. 364 pp. A perfect copy. - Summary: This book explores the extent to which four sensation novelists responded to the Victorian theorizing of professionalism. A crucial period of redefinition of the professional ideal, the third quarter of the nineteenth century also witnessed the rise and the decline of the sensation novel, a scandalous and electrifying form that challenged aesthetic and socio-cultural standards. Owing to their controversial position in the literary marketplace, novelists like Wilkie Collins, Mary Elizabeth Braddon, Charles Reade and Ellen Wood developed a keen interest in professional issues, which occupy centre stage in their 1850s-70s narratives. By drawing on a variety of sociological, cultural and philosophical theories, Costantini skilfully assesses the ideological implications of the genres fictionalization of professionalism. She shows how sensation novelists provocatively represented the challenges faced by both elite and rising professionals, who are used as narrative vehicles for thorny discourses on authorship, ethicality, aestheticism and sociocultural identity. - Contents: Part I - Cultural and artistic professionals -- Chapter 1: Serving God and Mammon: Victorian art, sensation and market imperatives -- Cultural challenges and artistic preoccupations -- An open forum for professional debates: the sensation novel -- Chapter 2: The trials of periodical-press occupations -- The "laborious duties" of a Victorian editor -- (Im)moral censure and professional criticism -- The "young Buccaniers" of Victorian journalism -- Chapter 3: The professional dilemmas of literati -- Wo/men of letters: writing and identity -- "I'm a scamp and a scoundrel": the professional ascent of a bohemian -- Profit-oriented and respectable: the contradictions of the bourgeois writer -- Chapter 4: Sensational virtuosi of the brush -- Vocation, labour and the temptations of customized art -- Roguery and artistry: incompatible notions? -- A respectable bohemian: towards a new model -- Chapter 5: Venal, playful, charming: the hallmarks of professional performers -- Going on the stage in the mid-nineteenth century -- Braddon's sensational actresses -- An amiable swindler: acting and cheating in No Name -- Part II - Tradition and innovation: medicine and the legal world -- Chapter 6: Victorian lawyering and the novel -- The homo ethicus and the redefinition of the old professions -- The legal world and literature: Victorian intersections -- The golden slavery of professionalism: three sensational models -- Chapter 7: Agents of law and order -- The rise of detectives: from history to fiction -- Variations of amateur detection -- Professionals in a quandary: career prospects and moral puzzles -- Chapter 8: Challenging the Hippocratic Oath: ethics and the medical profession -- Nineteenth-century medicine and the spirit of reform -- Sensational intersections: literature, medical practice and deontology -- Doctoring in the world of capitalist economy -- The new frontiers of gender: she-doctors and nurses.
