Les plus grands mémorialistes ont été depuis longtemps l'objet de monographies attentives, parfois tentées de les envisager dans la singularité d'une poétique individuelle ou d'une « optique » les transformant en isolats littéraires. L'unité éventuelle du corpu…s des mémorialistes d'Ancien Régime a été, pour sa part, progressivement interrogée depuis les années 1980, et des approches plus récentes se sont penchées sur le devenir des Mémoires aux XIXe et XXe siècles. L'idée de Mémoires est donc bien établie dans notre imaginaire culturel, sur une longue durée qui court depuis les « commencements » forcément difficiles à penser de l'époque de Commynes jusqu'aux relectures postmodernes ou expérimentales de notre présent, en passant par ces oeuvres de référence pour le grand massif des Mémoires que sont Monluc, Retz, Saint-Simon, Chateaubriand ou de Gaulle et, si l'on accepte de remettre en question des oppositions sans doute artificielles, Rousseau. Deux questions cependant semblaient rester en attente que cet ouvrage, sans forcément vouloir y répondre de manière tranchée, a choisi de mettre en lumière. Y a-t-il une continuité historique effective et une unité pensable de ce que nous appelons Mémoires, qui pourrait se cristalliser dans la notion de « genre » ? Peut-on dégager un cadre théorique pour penser ce corpus multiforme et presque insaisissable, et, en particulier, envisager dans une perspective théorique ses relations à la fois fascinantes et problématiques avec la littérature, la fiction ou l'histoire .
