Hard Cover. Condition: Near Fine. Near Fine. 4th Printing. 4th printing (Ford-Smith, Folio 76 #1140). Includes publisher's slipcase. Fine book in near fine slipcase. Slipcase faintly scuffed. Binding tight and square, pages clean, bright, and unmarked. 2003 Hard Cover. 288 pp. A collection of humorous vignettes by various authors, with contributions by William Shakespeare, Samuel Johnson, Charles Dickens, Winston S. Churchill, the Queen of England, G.K. Chesterton, P.G. Wodehouse, Mark Twain, Dorothy Parker, Groucho Marx, etc., etc. Ever since Chaucer's day, when the host of the Tabard Inn in Southwark rose to welcome the Canterbury Pilgrims with a joke, the After Dinner Speech, designed, if possible, to reduce the assembled company to helpless merriment, has presented the ultimate challenge. The best speakers are natural story-tellers - Gerard Hoffnung, reading a selection of letters from continental hoteliers: 'There is a French widow in every bedroom affording delightful prospects'; John Mortimer telling the woeful tale of a man's numerous unsuccessful attempts to murder his wife: 'At no time did Mrs Scott feel that the magic had gone out of their marriage' - and in this collection of post-prandial treasures you will find the very best of them, from Groucho Marx on how to resist a femme fatale, to Ralph Steadman surreally addressing the Lewis Carroll Centenary Dinner. 'Goodness', said a friend on greeting Mae West, 'where did you get those beautiful pearls?' 'Goodness', replied Mae, 'had nothing to do with it.' Shaggy dog stories, practical jokes, sporting anecdotes, rousing toasts, travellers' tales and risque reminiscences rub shoulders in this essential collection with real-life revelations and moments of history. Among the guests are Peter Ustinov, Jilly Cooper, Brian Johnstone, Charles Dickens, Dorothy Parker, Robertson Davies, Henry Grady and A.P. Herbert. There is food and drink in abundance. There is gentle reflection and endearing charm as well as defiant frivolity. Above all there are stories for every occasion - witty, absurd, momentous, philosophical, fascinating, poignant, and forever entertaining.…

8vo; original red cloth, lettered in black on spine and upper cover; no dustwrapper (likely as issued); pp. xii + 230; plates. Presentation inscription from expedition member Billie Williams to frontis. A very bright, clean copy. Very good condition. "Using a Chevrolet sedan and a one-ton truck built at the new Port Elizabeth plant, this well-organised safari, which was even equipped with wireless transmitting and receiving equipment, struggled through to Cairo and on via the eastern Mediterranean coast to Stockholm in nine months." - R. H. Johnston: Early Motoring in South Africa, p. 147. "The Chevrolet Expedition organised by General Motors South African Limited, Port Elizabeth, left Capetown on March 7th, 1928, and arrived in Stockholm, Sweden, on December 7th, 1928. The Expedition consisted of a sedan car and a one-ton truck, the aim of the journey through three continents to Stockholm being to prove the endurance and reliability of these vehicles. The trip was one of the most gruelling feats of endurance performed in modern motor cars, for the journey through the African continent was begun at a time when Central and East Africa were in full flood, and when transport of all kinds in those areas was practically suspended. . It is my aim to tell you of some of the wonderful things we saw along that great road of romance and adventure, the Great North Road to Cairo and beyond, and I want you if you will to laugh with me along the way." - from the author's foreword.…

The covers would be very good if not for a 1cm patch of loss to the upper hinge, with spine faded. The interiors are fine with spotting and foxing, with previous owner's name pencilled to the front pastedown. The expedition for General Motors South Africa included Clive Victor Hume Lacey (Leader), Gordon Makepeace (Motor Editor of The Johannesburg Star, and representative the Argus Group), Billy Williams (cinematographer), Wally Williams (wireless operator), and Tonge Simon (Zambian general assistant). Travelling in a Chevrolet sedan and a one-ton truck, they left Cape Town in March and arrived in Stockholm in December. They travelled via Rhodesia, Tanganyika, Kenya, Uganda, Sudan, Egypt, Palestine, Syria, Turkey, the Balkans, Switzerland, France, and England. They aimed to "prove the endurance and reliability of these vehicles", and the trip proved to be "one of the most gruelling feats of endurance performed in modern motorcars - when Central and East Africa were in full flood" (p. xi). During the expedition Makepeace prepared the "Cape to Cairo Argus - The First Newspaper ever produced on a Trans-continental Motor Run" which went through at least 2 issues, reporting on progress. …
