Begun in 1673 with allegations levelled by Leycester in his Historical Antiquities, later denied by Mainwaring, the debate raged until 1679 - their historiographic arguments eventually encompassing much of the social and political life of the twelfth century. The recipient of this copy was presumably Sir Edward Lutwyche (1634-1709), judge and politician. That said, aside from Mainwaring and Lutwyche living in neighbouring counties, we have been unable to determine a connection. John Evelyn's copy, presumably acquired after the presentation to Lutwyche, with the twentieth century booklabel marking this as such to FEP, lot number 953 in the second part of the Christies sale of the Evelyn Library, March 1978.
