Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: No Jacket (as issued). First Edition. 2014. 155pp, Colour and b&w illustrations. As new with no inscriptions. PLEASE NOTE: Heavyish book so extra may be needed for shipping to non-UK customers. "The Ballad of Sir Patric Spens is probably the best-known of traditional Scots Bal…lads. The artist Robert Burns (1869-1942) created an exceptionally strong version of the ballad, with striking illustrations and hand-lettering in a monastic script. Burns included the coats of arms of Scottish nobles who might have travelled with Spens on his fateful mission to "Norroway" to bring a princess home. The origins of the ballad are examined by Dr Emily Lyle, and Dr John Purser discusses its musical settings and the wave-like metre of the poetry; Charles Burnett, Ross Herald of the Lyon Court, has identified the artist's source for the coats of arms and the families to which they belonged; Prof Murdo Macdonald examines Burns' relationship with Sir Patric Geddes and his "Evergreen Magazine"; a biography of Burns by Martin Forrest identifies the artistic influences that affected Burns' life and work; a summary about the artist and the ballad is provided by Prof Michael Lynch. This volume concludes with a selected 'Gallery' of Burns' work, which demands recognition for Robert Burns with his contemporaries, "The Glasgow Boys"". Robert Burns (illustrator).

Red Cloth Hardback. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. 1994. xxiv, 428pp including index. B&W illustrations. Light pencil marking to one chapter (The Dialogue of the Twa Wyfeis by Mark Loughlin) otherwise the book is in very good condition. There is a little wear to the edges of the unclipped…dust jacket. "The Renaissance in Scotland is a collection of original essays on a wide range of topics concerning the cultural history of Scotland. The period concerned extends from the late fifteenth through to the early seventeenth century. The individual studies take various aspects of culture as their starting-points: literature; the history of manuscripts and printed books; libraries; the law; the universities; music; education; social, political and ecclesiastical history. The essays, however, all take full account of the larger context provided by the age of humanism and reform, as this was manifested in Scotland. The Renaissance in Scotland contains an abundance of new information and offers many challenging new insights and interpretations. It will be of interest to all those concerned with the cultural and intellectual history of Scotland and of northern Europe in general."
