The author, a professor of mechanical drawing at the Stevens Institute of Technology, was formerly the chief draughtsman for Captain John Ericsson. From the text, "The story of the Monitor's building has been often told: the fertility of invention, facility in designing, speed and accuracy in drawing, promptness in execution, and unwearied industry which made the construction possible in so short a time -- all these are familiar.
