Die Niederschlagsverhältnisse im Sahel und im sahelnahen Bereich sind in mehrfacher Hinsicht von groÃer Bedeutung: a) dem sehr starken Süd-Nord-Gradient der Isohyeten entspricht ein solcher der Vegetation und somit auch der landwirtschaftlichen Produktion; b) während der Jahre um 1975 gab es - einmal mehr - starke Niederschlagsdefizite mit gravierenden Folgen für die Land- und damit hier auch Volkswirtschaft; c) die Problematik des jetzt nahezu andauernd angespannten Wasserhaushaltes warf die Frage auf: überwiegend natürlich oder anthropogen? Brauchbare Daten des Niederschlags in angemessener zeitlicher und räumlicher Auflà sung sind daher von zwingender Notwendigkeit. Hier wird nun von einem Autor, der viele Niederschlagsstationen Westafrikas sowie ihre Bearbeitungen und Korrekturen aus eigener Anschauung kennt, eine Analyse täglicher Niederschlagsdaten vorgenommen. Dies ist ein Risiko. Denn leider sind Niederschlagsmessungen in Gebieten lokal begrenzter Regenereignisse, besonders solche aus den Zeiten vor etwa 1950, fehleranfällig und oft fehlerhaft.
