Its title quotes John Ruskin, wishing in 1849 'to render architecture historical'. Criticism of contemporary design methodology, technology and style resulted in a new conception of form, combining basically unchanging types with dynamic elements of time and place. The large hall surrounded by galleries, forming the museum as built, is discussed in relation to models such as the house and the temple, the cathedral and the secular basilica. Composition as the fundamental means of architectural design is replaced by an attempt to re-establish the traditional process of historical transformation. Writings by Gottfried Semper, Eugène Viollet-le-Duc as well as by Clason himself and others are brought into the context, along with a number of related contemporary and historical buildings. The building of the Nordic Museum is seen to be focusing main trends of architectural thinking of the 19th century, concerned with the vernacular and the monumental, the peripheral and the historical".
