Comenzó a publicar en varias revistas universitarias, y publicó sus primeros poemas en 1947, y su primera novela en 1954. Colaboró en la fundación de Revista Española, junto a otros escritores de la época. En 1958 marchó a Estados Unidos, en donde pasó un año. Aficionado al boxeo y los toros, era un enamorado del mar, por lo que pasó largas temporadas en Cantabria, Canarias o Ibiza. En el año 1958, obtuvo el Premio de la Crítica de la Narrativa Castellana.
