In French, translated from the original English. Illustrated with eight monochrome plates. Collated, complete. A supplemental work to Ludwig Gruner's 'Specimens of Ornamental Art'. An interesting work on the ornamental details found on Italian architecture from the twelfth to fifteenth century. Written by Ludwig Gruner, a Keeper of the Royal Print Room at Dresden. He was also an engraver an art publisher, directing the production of chromolithography by Storch & Kramer. Illustrated by Emile Braun. August Emile Braun was a German archaeologist, who devoted his career to art history. In a quarter morocco binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, smart. A little rubbing to the boards and spine. Front hinge is starting but remains firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with just a few spots. Very Good. book.

LACKS title page, contains 80 plates complete, 20 line engraved plates, 12 tinted or plain lithograph plates and 48 fine chromolithograph or two tone colour printed plates (these all tissue guarded). Some general spotting, occasionally heavy as often with this work. The quality and colour of a number of the chromolithograph plates is extremely good particularly the flowers and plates of Pompeian frescos. The binding also makes this a handsome shelf piece. A work intended as an educational aid for the applied arts.

Marbled endpapers. Large 12mo. Inscription on half title. Some minor spotting. Beautiful volume, inside and out. The plates by Humphreys are illuminated by Gruner, 'and probably printed in the establishment of Owen Jones, whose style the illuminations resemble' (McLean: Victorian Book Design, p.92). Born in Desden, Lewis (Ludwig) Gruner (1801-1882) was Prince Albert's trusted adviser on art and design, for instance on the details of the Crystal Palace, and on potential acquisitions for the newly-established South Kensington Museum. Gruner was mentor to Owen jones, whose massive book production, influenced the nature of colour plate printing and Victorian book design.

Grunner's monumental work on Italian frescos, during the 15th and 16th centuries revolutionized British interior design. The work is heavily illustrated with examples of murals, arabesque decoration, ornate stucco, church decorations, palaces, monasteries, etc of Lazio, Rome, Lombardy, Mantua, Pavia, etc. Images of the walls of the Old Ducal Palace at Mantua (the Buonacolsi and Gonzagas) as well as 'il Paradiso' the apartment of Isabella d'Este, Coreggio's Camere di S. Paolo in Parma, the Palazzo Martinengo in Brescia, the Moretto in Brescia, the Certosa in Pavia, the library of Siena, the Choir of Santa Maria del Popolo of Rome are included. As well as an Essay On The Arabesques Of The Ancients As Compared With Those Of Raphael And His School by A. Hittorf. "According to the Preface, Part I (on Roman palaces) is largely based on J. Thurmer and J.G. Gutensohn's Sammlung von Denkmalern u. Verzierungen der Baukunst in Rom (Dresden, 1832). The engraved title plate carries the name of its source-artist, 'Bal. Peruzzi', and is not otherwise signed. In the group of plates numbered 1-30 no plates are signed by a draughtsman apart from pl. 24 (by Sc. Pistrucci) and pl. 28, 29 (by L. Gruner), but several are signed by engravers I.G.G. (or G.G.), I.Th., D. Ascani or E. Salandri. In the group numbered I-XIII, three are signed as drawn by F(r). Lose and one by A.
