Add to basketSheet. Condition: Fine. Quarto. 1 page. Lettre du "Brain Tumor Registry" signée par la conservatrice, Louise Eisenhardt (élève de Cushing) Dr. Louise Eisenhardt (1891-1967), Typed Letter Signed on letterhead of the Brain Tumor Registry of Yale University School of Medicine, April 1956, with Quebec neurosurgical content (Dr. Maurice Héon) Dr. Eisenhardt was one of the first neuropathologists and a leading world expert on Tumor Diagnosis. She was a close collaborator to Dr. Harvey Cushing, the eminent American Neurosurgeon often called the father of neurosurgery, and also famous for his writing of the book The Life of Sir William Osler. She started as his Secretary, was encouraged by Cushing to do her medical studies and eventually became Neuropathologist and his assistant/collaborator. In 1934, Eisenhardt moved with Cushing when he went from Harvard to Yale. Together they worked on a brain tumor registry with more than 2,000 specimens. She became Conservator of the Brain Tumor Registry in Yale School of Medicine in 1938 (upon Cushing's death). She helped neurosurgeons around the world identify tumors and their treatments. In 1944, Eisenhardt became the Managing Editor of Journal of Neurosurgery and stayed there for 22 years. Up to now, she is the only female President of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons. The letter is related to the studies of Dr. Maurice Héon in neuropathology under Eisenhardt's instruction as a Conservator in the Brain Tumor Registry at Yale School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut during the years 1954 and 1955. Dr Héon later became a Neurosurgeon at Hôpital de l'Enfant-Jésus and Professor at Université Laval in Quebec City. Very scarce. Very good condition. Letterhead of the Brain Tumor registry with Eisenhardt's name as Conservator and with those of the Advisory Board, including Drs. Wilder Penfield (Montreal), Bailey, Cairns, Grant, Harvey, Heuer, Sachs, Van Wagenen and Wolbach. Signed by Author.…

Slight indentation in upper blank margin of pp. 403-464 (see photo of top fore edge), else Near Fine, in dust jacket. First Edition. Garrison Morton 4612 and 4909.01. Cushing Bibliography no. 24: "The present volume was commenced in 1915 soon after the completion of his volume on the pituitary disorders, and it therefore represents nearly twenty-five years of work; by common consent it is regarded as Dr. Cushing's greatest monograph. It is the embodiment of all the things he has stood for during his career as a clinician: his painstaking case records and photographs, his unusual artistic ability evident in his own numerous operative sketches, and his extraordinary knowledge of the day-to-day life of his patients. . . . 1765 copies were printed, none with English imprint." Some of the passage quoted above from the Bibliography is also quoted by John Fulton on p. 700 of his biography of Harvey Cushing. Fulton does not name the person who wrote this, only referring to the person as one of Cushing's "friends". Fulton does quote more by Cushing's friend: "the day-to-day life of his patients, the fact that he gave as much, if not more, time and attention to the impecunious Tim Donovan as he did to Leonard Wood can be read between the lines and it makes the book irresistibly fascinating." The pages in Cushing's book for Timothy Donovan are pp. 667, 669, 700, 734; those for Leonard Wood are pp. 408-414. NOTE ABOUT AVAILABILITY OF COPIES OF THE FIRST EDITION: As of the posting of this copy online, there are 8 other copies of the first edition online (3 of the 8 being special, as they were inscribed by Cushing). So copies of the first edition are available, including copies with the dust jacket. This copy is especially bright and the dust jacket, although not perfect, is very nice.…

The meticulous categorization of meningiomas, their presentation, clinical outcome, and surgical therapies are even further supplemented by Cushing's personal commentary, questions, and recollections. Cushing's genius was evident in his ability not only to make insightful clinical observations, but also to synthesize these ideas within the neurosurgical context of his era. As he says in Meningiomas, "Thus the pathological curiosity of one day becomes in its proper time a commonplace. Most of which are one and the same disorder--had, for their interpretation, to await the advent of the Neurosurgeon." ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall.…

Add to basket8vo. xiv, 785 pp. Frontispiece, illustrations. Original navy blue cloth, gilt-stamped spine, dust-jacket; spine faded, jacket spine ends chipped. Ownership signature of Dr. Murl E. Kinal. Bookplate of Harry B. Friedman. Very good in very good - jacket. FIRST EDITION of Cushing's monumental work on tumors arising from the meninges. Quintessential in its field, this monograph is widely considered to represent some of Cushing's finest work. "It remains the classic description of this group of tumors and continues to fascinate neurosurgeons the world over today" (Lee, p. 8). "The present treatise was commenced in 1915 soon after the completion of his volume on the pituitary disorders, and it therefore represents nearly twenty-five years of work; by common consent it is regarded as Dr. Cushing's greatest clinical monograph. It is the embodiment of all the things he has stood for during his career as a clinician: his painstaking case records and photographs, his unusual artistic ability evident in his own numerous operative sketches, and his extraordinary knowledge of the day-to-day life of his patients" (AANS, XIII, No. 24). "Meningiomas was hailed by reviewers as a masterpiece, a classic, an epic of neurosurgery, and proof of Cushing's stature 'as one of the great surgeons of all time. Geoffrey Jefferson observed that it contained a whole philosophy of surgery and of the doctor-patient relationship. . . .' The book was Cushing's last published word as a neurosurgeon" (Bliss, p. 510). "The improvement in neurosurgical outcomes at the turn of the 20th century was a result of more refined surgical technique, application of Lister's antiseptic principles, and more precise localization of tumor. Cushing's contributions were crucial to the advancement of intracranial surgery for meningioma and for that matter, all of neurosurgery in general" (Pamir, et al.). PROVENANCE: Friedman is a Memphis, TN neurosurgeon. Kinal (1918-1965) was a British physician whose parents emigrated from the Ukraine. He was part of the 1956 Congress of Neurological Surgeons in Chicago (listed under Erie, PA), and his name is listed among the Directory of Neurological Surgeons in the United States, 1961. He died of lung cancer two months after his 47th birthday. On Kinal: "My father was a great man of great achievements. He projected an integrity and vision so compelling that even today, 23 years after his death, people speak of him with a reverence belonging to historic heroes and saints. He was not a saint. On the contrary, his tremendous personal magnetism flowed from the fact that he was an ordinary man who did and said extraordinary things, who strove not to elevate himself above others but to inspire others to rise to their own maximum potential (Kinal, Brian). Davidoff]/who will find many of his foot prints herein/Harvey Cushing." Davidoff's engraved bookplate and ink stamp (with his address) on front pastedown. Enclosed in a cloth clamshell box. This is the first edition of Cushing's great work on meningiomas. Cushing was one of the founders of neurological surgery. This copy has been inscribed to Leo Davidoff, Cushing's "assistant in neurological surgery" for the period November 1925 to October 1926. Davidoff was the coauthor with Cushing of one monograph (see Cushing bibliography, no. 12) and at least two papers. "One of the greatest contributors to the development of neuroradiology was the neurosurgeon Leo. N. Davidoff. He was a surgical resident at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in 1924, and began his neurological training there the following year. 'Davey' was one of Cushing's favorite disciples, and he is considered among the most skilled. [His] publications helped establish Leo Davidoff as the father of neuroradiology in North America. Davidoff raised the standards of neuroradiographic interpretation. In doing so he created the framework for methods of passing this information to his intellectual descendants."
