Item description from seller

Frontispiece, xiv, 785 pp; 685 figs. Original cloth. Bottom corner of front cover bumped. Half title foxed (see photo). Fore edges foxed (see photo). Slight musty odor. First Edition. SIGNED BY HARVEY CUSHING: "Dr. Martin Gumpert/ with the compliments of/ Harvey Cushing" (see photo). Martin Gumpert devoted a chapter to Harvey Cushing in his book "Das Leben für die Idee. Neun Forscherschicksale" (1935), which was translated into English as "Trail-Blazers of Science. Life Stories of Some Half Forgotten Pioneers of Modern Research" (1936). The chapter on Harvey Cushing is entitled, in the English translation, "The Outlook. Harvey Cushing, the Brain Surgeon, a Type of the Future Scientist." Gumpert sent a copy of the original German edition to Harvey Cushing, who had not known about Gumpert's work until the book had been published. After reading the German edition, Cushing wrote a long letter to Gumpert (November 19, 1935), which Gumpert included--with the title "When Pavlov Visited America"--in the English translation. Thomson, Harvey Cushing, p. 309. Cushing Bibliography no. 24. Garrison-Morton 4612 and 4909.01. "The present treatise was commenced in 1915 soon after the completion of his volume on the pituitary disorders, and it therefore represents nearly twenty-five years of work; by common consent it is regarded as Dr. Cushing's greatest clinical monograph. It is the embodiment of all the things he has stood for during his career as a clinician: his painstaking case records and photographs, his unusual artistic ability evident in his own numerous operative sketches, and his extraordinary knowledge of the day-to-day life of his patients" (Cushing Bibliography no. 24, p. 18; cf. Fulton, Harvey Cushing, p. 700). Heirs of Hippocrates 2275.…
