First edition of the standard modern bibliography of Étienne Dolet (1509-1546), the Lyon humanist, printer, and bookseller who was executed for heresy. It supersedes the earlier bibliography of Richard Copley Christie, which Longeon considered insufficiently precise by modern bibliographical standards, particularly in its treatment of Dolet's typographic material. As stated in the Avant-propos, the work aims to record and describe every item authored by Dolet or produced with his participation as author, editor, and/or printer, including manuscripts, printed books, and works known only through documentary references. The extensive introduction, Étienne Dolet et l'imprimerie, is followed by a detailed examination of his typographic material, including printer's marks and devices, ornamental initials, and typefaces, together with a section of archival documents. The bibliography proper describes Dolet's printed works and manuscripts according to rigorous analytical principles derived from Fredson Bowers: format, signature collation, pagination formula, typographic description, bibliographical references, and locations of extant copies. Entries are generally accompanied by a photographic reproduction of the title page or other relevant bibliographical evidence. The volume concludes with an alphabetical list of works described, a table of printers and booksellers by place of activity, and a general index of proper names.
