The first edition of Catharine Long's (1797-1867) first published work, an evangelical novel which, through contemporary religious themes, sought to undermine the Tractarian movement that she so despised. The Church of England Quarterly Review found the work wanting: 'The tale is pleasing but melancholy, and though brightened by the influence of Christianity, it leaves a sad and pensive feeling behind.
