Item description from seller

In two volumes. vii, [1], 380; [4], 420pp. With a tipped-in errata slip to each volume. Contemporary green half-calf, green cloth boards, tooled in gilt and blind, contrasting red morocco lettering-pieces. A trifle rubbed. Recent bookplate of Robert J. Hayhurst to FEP of Vol. I, early inked gift inscriptions to both FEPs, spotted. The first edition of Catharine Long's (1797-1867) first published work, an evangelical novel which, through contemporary religious themes, sought to undermine the Tractarian movement that she so despised. The Church of England Quarterly Review found the work wanting: 'The tale is pleasing but melancholy, and though brightened by the influence of Christianity, it leaves a sad and pensive feeling behind. There is little dramatic skill, no profound investigation of character; but still the book is one that deserves and has attained popularity'. Size: 8vo.

Store description

Established 2007, Antiquates Ltd is an Antiquarian bookseller with a large, custom built shop in the heart of the Dorset countryside. We sell fine and rare books from our Wareham shop, in catalogues, and via our website (www.antiquates.co.uk). Specialising in early printed books both English and Continental, fine English Literature, and books by, for, and about Women and Children, we nevertheless stock a wide range of works on paper from 1500-present - including modern first editions. Our bias is towards the unusual, the interesting and the important - and always have a good stock of rare books by local authors such as T.E. Lawrence and Thomas Hardy; we are just the place if you're looking for an extra-special gift for a wedding, birthday, anniversary or graduation. (Open Wednesday - Saturday, 10am-4pm)…
