Le premier sort des presses d'Honoré de Balzac, il est l'un des plus recherchés, car le plus réussi, des impressions balzaciennes. De 1826 à 1828, année de sa faillite, Balzac fut imprimeur (et fondeur de caractères) et produisit toutes sortes de volumes, parmi lesquels de nombreuses plaquettes publicitaires, des physiologies, des ouvrages didactiques, des mémoires, des oeuvres littéraires et quelques pièces condamnées, comme celle-ci. Cette édition est beaucoup plus rare que sa deuxième édition, datant de la même année, et il est peu fréquent de trouver les deux tomes ainsi réunis. Très agréable exemplaire, malgré de menus frottis aux coiffes et des rousseurs sans gravité affectant le frontispice et 10 ff. du tome 1 et quelques rousseurs éparses au tome 2. Dispatched as a diplomat to Russia by Louis Philippe, he was later ambassador to Baghdad, Caracas and Lima.Louis-Émile Vanderburch (1794-1862) was a 19th century writer and playwright. Auguste Romieu (1800-1855) was a writer and administrator for the state. This copy with Monnier's two finished original watercolor drawings for the plates bound in.
