Paperback. Condition: Fine. xv, 271 pages, illustrations (some colour); 31 cm. Catalogue of an exhibition held at the Art Institute of Chicago, October 20, 2003 to January 19, 2004; and other venues. Firm binding, clean inside copy. Richly illustrated with colour plates. *** "Manet and the Sea is the first book to highlight the French master's beautiful and varied seascapes. Essays by leading scholars discuss how Manet completely overturned established academic conventions of marine painting in France. His provocative approach was equal to that of his contemporary Gustave Courbet, and his bold and innovative techniques inspired many younger artists, including Claude Monet, Berthe Morisot, James McNeill Whistler, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Essays on these and other artists place their seascapes in relation to Manet's pictures. This illustrated and designed book presents more than one hundred paintings and drawings in full color. Anyone interested in the sea, maritime painting, nineteenth-century French painting, and particularly the role Manet played in the Impressionist revolution, will find this a book to own." - Publisher. *** CONTENTS: Manet and the Dutch Marine Tradition, by Lloyd Dewitt; Marine Painting in Mid-Nineteenth-Century France, by John Zarobell; The Sea as Metaphor in Nineteenth-Century France, by Gloria Groom; Manet and the Sea, by Juliet Wilson-Bareau, David Degener; Gustave Courbet, by Joseph J. Add to basketHard Cover. Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. Hard cover 8vo (19cm ht.) in blue cloth stamped with three bands of rule in blind centering a vignette of an ornate handbell in gilt to center front board, with design mirrored in blind to the rear board and the spine decorated with a filigree pattern of gilt with title inset. All edges gilt. Cream end papers, tissue-guarded engraved title page by J.A. Foster with bell hanging from tree inscribed with motto: "Proclaim Liberty for All." This is a representation of the actual Liberty Tree, an elm near Boston Common which was a rallying point for patriots from the time of colonial protest against British taxation, and punitively destroyed by British soldiers in 1775. It has been called " a beloved symbol of hope and resistance throughout the colonies and in Boston." CONDITION: Near Fine antiquarian condition. Hinges and joints are in order, one bumped front corner, otherwise minimal wear to covers and tips, one very small area of rubbing at foot of spine. A few light colored spots of discoloration to top board, two penciled notes to front end papers. Binding firm but lightly cocked. Light foxing to engraved illustrated title page and following letterpress title page but rest of volume is clean and bright. **"The Liberty Bell"anthology of anti-slavery writings was produced by the "Friends of Freedom," a collaborative effort of Boston's Maria Weston Chapman (1806-1885) and other members of the Boston Female Anti-Slavery Society and their supporters and for sale at their fund-raising bazaar. Member contributors included Anne Warren Weston, Henrietta Sargent, Maria Lowell, and English supporters of the cause, economist and novelist, Harriet Martineau and poet Emma Michell. Male antipathy to the Boston Female Anti-Slavery Society and its members (mobbed by 5,000 "gentlemen of property and standing" in a Boston meeting of 1835) gives another layer of the complicated dynamics of the abolition movement in Massachusetts at this time. The book represents a variety of viewpoints in the twenty nine items of poetry, essays and letters. Some come from the pen of more quasi-militant opponents of slavery, including members of the Boston Vigilance Committee, including Rev. Theodore Parker, Wendell Phillips, and Henry I. Bowditch, father of contributor William I. Bowditch. The "Secret Six" militants are represented by the words of Thomas Wentworth Higginson, (also once a Newburyport Unitarian minister and literary mentor of a young Emily Dickinson,) and William Lloyd Garrison of "The Liberator." David Lee Child, sugar-beet entrepreneur, abolitionist and husband of Lydia Maria Child, (who edited the National Anti-Slavery Standard in the 1840's and also supported the family with her fiction,) is another contributor. ** The impact of the recent prosecution of escaped slave Thomas Sims in Boston under the Fugitive Slave Act is worth exploring in these essays and poems. Thomas Sims of Savannah, Georgia sailed north and was arrested in April, 1851. When brought to trial in Boston, the Superior Courthouse was mobbed and famously shackled--supposedly to prevent his supporters from breaking him out. He was sent back to Georgia in a stinging set-back for the abolitionists. Sophia L. Little's poem, The Autograph of Sims" directly addresses his plight in this volume. International abolitionists contributing to this issue included British economist, novelist and activist, Harriet Martineau, the Swedish ambassador Baron de Stael- Holstein (his wife was active in anti-slavery circles), showing how Boston's abolition movement reflected progressive European concerns about the social injustices done by "old world despots." REFS: Sabin 40942, Vol.X (1868) for 1839 issue, and "continued." Shaw and Shoemaker (1839) 56830 for 1839-1858 lists 6 vols., inclusive. 10 unique editions of "The Liberty Bell" are seen in Hathi archives in the years between 1839 and 1853, not including this one for 1852; Scarce. (AMJ). J.A. Foster (illustrator). Book.…

Add to basketCondition: Near Fine. First Edition. Large collection of 170 World War I propaganda pamphlets, chiefly British, together with clippings and other ephemera. Many items bear complimentary slips of either Sir Gilbert Parker (a Canadian novelist who was tasked with molding elite US opinion for the British) or Professor William Macneile Dixon of the University of Glasgow, his assitant. Overall Near Fine condition with some age toning and minimal wear. A fascinating assortment that can be roughly divided into the following subsections: - 37 pamphlets addressing various aspects of the war, consisting mainly of open letters. These include pleas for neutral powers to commit themselves and protestations of Allied innocence. T.W. Rolleston explains why the English treatment of Ireland can in no way be compared to the Prussian treatment of Poland, and the Keeper of the Department of Coins and Medals at the British Museum offers a snide analysis of Germany's commemorative medals. - 29 pamphlets with a distinctly British focus, of which one, The Navy and the War, is a duplicate. Other titles include: How the British Blockade Works, The Character of the British Empire, and Why Mail Censorship is Vital to Britain. A Clear Peace: The War Aims of British Labour contains a statement issued jointly at the Inter-Allied Labour and Socialist Conference held in London in February 1918, and German Prisoners in Great Britain features photographs of well-cared-for prisoners of war playing ball, engaging in amateur theatricals, and tending to their gardens. - 22 bulletins, titled "Facts About the War" and published by the Paris Chamber of Commerce, of which 14 are still in partially opened envelopes addressed to Professor Arthur William Meyer at Stanford University and postmarked 1917 and 1918. - 19 miscellaneous items, including newspaper clippings, maps, a letter to the editor ("Supremacy of the British Soldier") by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and six letters (with one duplicate) sent by out the National Woman's Liberty Loan Committee to explain how the American public's money is being spent. The letters have some splits to the fold lines, and one sheet was torn in two so the verso could be used for a clothing list dated October 11, 1918. - 17 pamphlets published in the United States or promoting American involvement in the war, of which two (both related to 4th of July celebrations in London) are duplicates. Two are small booklets issued by the Committee on Public Information, titled The German Whisper and The Kaiser in America: One Hundred and One German Lies, which seek to persuade the reader that every false rumor or negative sentiment going around the country is the work of a German agent. Other items include Leading Opinions Both For and Against National Defense, self-published by the chemist and inventor Hudson Maxim (from the the family that produced the Maxim gun and Maxim silencer) and Reconstructing the Crippled Soldier, a Red Cross publication promoting the new prosthetics being created for disabled soldiers. - Eleven pamphlets denouncing German atrocities, of which one, The Black Slaves of Prussia, is a duplicate (the Anglican Bishop of Zanzibar expresses his touching concern that Africa will be enslaved to Germany -- at the time, most of the African continent was under French or British rule). Two pamphlets address the sinking of neutral or hospital ships, and one relatively mild booklet, Linguistic Oppression in the German Empire, recounts Prussian attempts to force ethnic minorities in outlying areas to adopt the German language. On the opposite end of the scale, Their Crimes is a classic of the genre, memorialized in textbooks today, which accuses German troops in Belgium of slaughtering children en masse and killing a headmaster for refusing to trample on his country's flag. - Ten pamphlets reproducing speeches by various leaders including H.H. Asquith, David Lloyd George, and General Smuts. - Eight pamphlets attempting to condemn the Germans in their own words, with titles.…
