Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. pp64-86, illustrated. Removed from AMERICAN ANTIQUITY, JOURNAL OF THE SOCIETY FOR AMERICAN ARCHAEOLOGY, Volume 47, Number 1, January, 1982. VG. In report covers. May include a first or last copied page. Synopsis: "This paper examines the development of social differentiation and simple decision-making organizations in the Mogollon region of the prehistoric American southwest. The authors suggest that intensifying managerial problems associated with the transition to sedentism may have selected for suprahousehold sociopolitical organizations. Based on cross-cultural data, a set of theoretical expectations concerning social differentiation and leadership development is formulated which focuses on regularities in the regional settlement pattern and intrasettlement distribution of architectural features and material goods. These expectations are then used to generate a set of propositions which are evaluated archaeologically using data from early pithouse villages. On the basis of a test of these propositions it appears that simple suprahousehold decision-making organizations were present in the American Southwest by A.D. 600. The implications of this interpretation for understanding subsequent developments in Southwestern prehistoric sociopolitical organization are then discussed.".

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. pp871-884, tables. Removed from AMERICAN ANTIQUITY, JOURNAL OF THE SOCIETY FOR AMERICAN ARCHAEOLOGY, Volume 46, Number 4, October, 1981. VG. In report covers. May include a first or last copied page. Synopsis: "The authors present the production step measure, an ordinal scale index of the labor input in ceramic manufacture. The measure is used to compare the relative labor costs of producing different kinds of pottery vessels. It is then employed in an analysis of archaeological ceramic samples from the Late Postclassic Valley of Oaxaca and the Reserve phase in the Pine Lawn Valley, New Mexico.".

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. pp822-833, tables. Removed from AMERICAN ANTIQUITY, JOURNAL OF THE SOCIETY FOR AMERICAN ARCHAEOLOGY, Volume 46, Number 4, October, 1981. VG. In report covers. May include a first or last copied page. Synopsis: "The authors examine the process of political development in relation to selected social and economic variables in the plateau region of the American Southwest. They argue that political development was closely associated with strategies of agricultural intensification, surplus production, changes in the organization and management of labor, and expanding regional exchange. They draw supporting data from several settlement systems and attempt to demostrate that both exotic and labor-intensive commodities were restricted to political and economic centers. They then examine the distribution of one category of these materials, ceramics through application of the `production step' measure. Their analysis suggests that access to highly decorated ceramic items was restricted to individuals residing at the largest centers. Traditional interpretations of the political organization of plateau region prehistoric groups stress their egalitarian qualities. The authors suggest that such interpretations be re-examined in the light of data and arguments presented here.".

Paperback. Condition: Very good +. Stated First Edition. Stated First Edition. Paperback. 9" X 6". xvii, 338pp. Very mild shelf wear to covers, corners, and edges of pictorial paper wraps. Pages are clean and unmarked. Binding is firm, tight, and sound. ABOUT THIS BOOK: California's earliest European colonists-Russian merchants and Spanish missionaries-depended heavily on Native Americans for labor to build and maintain their colonies, but they did so in very different ways. This richly detailed book brings together disparate skeins of the past-including little-known oral histories, native texts, ethnohistory, and archaeological excavations-to present a vivid new view of how native cultures fared under these two colonial systems. Kent Lightfoot's innovative work, which incorporates the holistic methods of historical anthropology, explores the surprising ramifications of these long-ago encounters for the present-day political status of native people in California. Lightfoot weaves the results of his own significant archaeological research at Fort Ross, a major Russian mercantile colony, into a cross-cultural comparison, showing how these two colonial ventures-one primarily mercantile and one primarily religious-contributed to the development of new kinds of native identities, social forms, and tribal relationships. His lively account includes personal anecdotes from the field and a provocative discussion of the role played by early ethnographers, such as Alfred Kroeber, in influencing which tribes would eventually receive federal recognition. Indians, Missionaries, and Merchants takes a fascinating, yet troubling, look at California's past and its role in shaping the state today.(Publisher).

paperback. Condition: Very Good in Wrappers. No Jacket. Berkeley. 2009. April 2009. University of California Press. Reprinted Paperback Edition. Very Good in Wrappers. 9780520256903. 130 color illustrations, 3 line illustrations, 8 maps. California Natural History Guides, 96. 512 pages. paperback. Cover design by Barbara Haines. keywords: Native American California Indian. DESCRIPTION - Capturing the vitality of California's unique indigenous cultures, this major new introduction incorporates the extensive research of the past thirty years into an illuminating, comprehensive synthesis for a wide audience. Based in part on new archaeological findings, it tells how the California Indians lived in vibrant polities, each boasting a rich village life including chiefs, religious specialists, master craftspeople, dances, feasts, and ceremonies. Throughout, the book emphasizes how these diverse communities interacted with the state's varied landscape, enhancing its already bountiful natural resources through various practices centered around prescribed burning. A handy reference section, illustrated with more than one hundred color photographs, describes the plants, animals, and minerals the California Indians used for food, basketry and cordage, medicine, and more. At a time when we are grappling with the problems of maintaining habitat diversity and sustainable economies, we find that these native peoples and their traditions have much to teach us about the future, as well as the past, of California. inventory #41584.
