He was sentenced in France to 10 years in jail in absentia; some of the stolen works were returned when he died, but many remained missing." Le rapport de Boucly fut conservé secret par Guizot, mais découvert après les journées de février 1848 et rendu public par le Moniteur du 19 mars. Dans cette réponse, Libri, qui avait été prévenu dès la fin de février de la découverte du rapport et avait aussitôt rejoint l'Angleterre, nie en bloc et en détail l'accusation de vol.
