Add to basket8vo, pp. ix, [3], 148, interleaved throughout; recto of second leaf (dedication) slightly oxidised, a few isolated spots, but a good copy in contemporary diced russia gilt, upper cover stamped in gilt with a knight on horseback and the text 'Texuntque fugas et proelia ludo', lower cover bearing the same stamp and the text 'Ludimus effigiem belli', chess pieces stamped in gilt in compartments of spine, wide inner dentelles tooled in gilt and with pawn motif stamped in gilt in corners, green watered silk endpapers with border ruled in gold, marbled edges; extremities rubbed, head and foot of spine slightly chipped, lower joint cracked, upper joint sometime neatly repaired.Second edition of William Lewis's translation of Greco; first published in 1819. William Lewis (17871870) learned chess under Jacob Henry Sarratt and went on to run a well-known chess school at 5 Nassau Street, Soho. 'He took part in the correspondence chess match between Edinburgh chess club and London chess club during 18248. Some sources refer to financial difficulties and bankruptcy in 1828 as a result of an unfortunate speculation in piano manufacture . Lewiswas the author of numerous works on chess, mostly elementary in character and drawing on those of his teacherSarratt . "The last and one of the best of the "old" writers" (Hooper and Whyld, 2245), his output was superseded by that of authors such asStaunton, more willing to synthesize previous work including Lewis'sown as a foundation for further analysis, and less inclined to reinvent the wheel for themselves' (ODNB). The remarkable binding of our copy incorporates a quote from Virgil, 'Texuntque fugas et proelia ludo' ('and wove mimic flights and battles fought for play', Aeneid Book 5, line 593) and the first line of Vida's Scacchia ludus, 'Ludimus effigiem belli' ('we are playing an image of war'). These texts tend to suggest that the binding was commissioned by, or presented to, a military man with an interest in chess. Van der Linde I, p. 367. Language: English.…

Add to basket3 volumes. Rare first Dutch edition of Travels to the source of the Missouri River and across the American continent to the Pacific Ocean by Meriwether Lewis and William Clarke, translated by the prolific Amsterdam based writer Nicolaas Godfried van Kampen. The importance of the Lewis and Clarke expedition (1804-06) can hardly be overestimated. The objective of the expedition, prompted by Thomas Jefferson, was to explore the Rocky Mountains, find a way to the Pacific, discover the source of the Missouri River and establish trading ties with the natives. The men brought back a wealth of new information about the geography, natural history and the many Indian cultures of the American West. They discovered numerous species of birds and plants hitherto unknown to science (e.g. Lewis's Woodpecker, Lewis's Syringa etc.). The explorers travelled, moreover, through Louisiana, a territory annexed to the United States just prior to the start of the expedition (1803), and then still as little known as the interior of Africa.Lewis had intended to edit his journals for publication, but his untimely death in 1809 prevented this. The official account of the expedition was eventually published in Philadelphia in 1814. The map shows the route Lewis and Clarke took along the Missouri River form St. Louis to the Straight of Juan du Fuca. The translator of this first Dutch edition, Van Kampen, taught history at the Athenaeum Illustre in Amsterdam. Besides publishing many works on Dutch history with a nationalistic undertone, Van Kampen translated multiple well-known books on travel and exploration, among others those of François Pouqueville and William Desborough Cooley. With an unidentified owner's stamp on the back of the title-page ("FLB"). Lacking leaf *1, as usual, possibly blank. Map foxed and some spots throughout, but otherwise in very good condition and wholly untrimmed.l Howes L317 note; NCC (4 copies); Sabin 40836; cf. Howgego, 1800-1850, L31. Modern half calf, marbled sides, title-labels on spine. With a large folding engraved map of the Missouri River (34.5 x 71 cm) by Cornelis van Baarsel and son, after the map in the first British edition.
