Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the concept of nobility in the context of medieval Europe. The author traces the evolution of the term from its ancient Greek origins to its adoption and development in Roman society. The author also examines how the concept of nobility shaped social, political, and economic structures in the Middle Ages, and how it influenced the development of heraldry and the rise of chivalry. This fascinating study provides valuable insights into the evolution of this complex and multifaceted concept that remains relevant in discussions of social stratification and class structures today. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very good. First. THE BEGINNING OF ARCHAEOLOGY -- EX-COLL. ÉTIENNE BALUZE and HONORÉ, 8TH DUC de LUYNES. Venice: Giovanni Rosso, 4 September 1514. First edition. Folio in 6s (11 ½" x 8 3/16", 292mm x 209mm). [Full collation available.] With 4 engraved plates by (after?) Girolamo Mocetto. Bound in later sprinkled calf with a double gilt fillet border surrounding a blind fleur-de-lys and palmette roll. On the spine, six raised bands. Title ("NOLA/ CUM/ FIGUR") gilt to the second panel, imprint gilt to the third. Gilt roll to the edges of the boards. All edges of the text-block glazed yellow. Strengthening to the corners. Generally scuffed and pitted. The first two leaves soiled, and a persistent pale damp-stain to the lower edge near the gutter. Worming throughout the lower and fore-margins, essentially avoiding the text, as well as a track at the gutter of B2-B4, not affecting the text. The first plate trimmed to the plate-mark at the tail, the fourth with a swath of skinning from adhesion at the lower-right. Shelfmark ("G.2.17.") in ink manuscript to the recto of the first binder's blank. Author ("Ambrosii Leonis") and imprint ("Ven. a. 1514.") in ink manuscript to the title-page, with a line drawn beneath "Opusculum." to indicate the end of the title. Ownership signature of Étienne Baluze ("Stephanus Baluzius Tutelensis.") to the title-page. "Archaeology" -- from Greek arkhaiologia, "discussing beginnings" -- has long been used to describe the study of anything ancient, whether text, history, language or material culture. "Scientific archaeology," i.e., the systematic and recorded excavation of sites and objects submerged in earth or water, has its origins in the Renaissance. As ancient texts began to be edited and disseminated in print, their readers naturally sought the places mentioned in their pages. Nola sits immediately northeast of Mount Vesuvius, the eruption of which in AD 79 buried it, as well as Pompeii and Herculaneum to its southeast and west, in layers of pyroclastic flow. Nola was occupied by the Ausones (Oscans), the native people of Campania, until its conquest by Rome in 313 BC; from then on it became a luxury destination for rich Romans; the country villa of Emperor Augustus at Nola was fairly certainly identified in 2024. Ambrogio Leone (Ambrosius Leo, ca. 1458-1525) was a proud son Nola, which was ruled by the Orsini within the Kingdom of Naples. Around 1500 Leone moved to Venice, where he entered the philhellenic circles of Aldus Manutius and Marcus Musurus. The first of three books places Nola in its physical and historical context, the second treats the contemporary city and the third its customs. Girolamo Mocetto (ca. 1470-ca. 1531), a pupil of Giovanni Bellini and of Mantegna, provided the four engravings -- something of a novelty in Italian books -- though doubtless the drafting and conception of the images is Leone's own, as Mocetto never left the Veneto. Étienne Baluze of Tulle (Stephanus Baluzius Tutelensis, 1630-1718) was a French scholar of renown, coming eventually to be the director of the Collège de France. His bibliophily brought him the post of librarian to Jean-Baptiste Colbert (le Grand Colbert, first minister under Louis XIV), where he will have handled many of the great printed books. Baluze published histories, including one of his hometown (Historia Tutelensis, 1716), for which the present volume was doubtless an important model. Baluze's library was auctioned in Paris after his death (8 May 1719), and the present volume was lot 1065. Honoré d'Albert, 8th Duke of Luynes (1802-1867), excavated at Metapontum (an ancient Greek site at the arch of the Italian boot), and published throughout his life on Greek, Roman and near eastern archaeology. The present volume was lot 367 in the Sotheby's Paris sale of the library of the dukes of Luynes out of the Château de Dampierre (part II, 22 October 2013).
