Thomas Mann, der Galsworthy den deutschen Lesern wiederholt nahebrachte, äußerte sich über ihn und sein Werk: «Ich werde die Bekanntschaft mit dem dichterischen Historiker des englischen Bürgertums immer als einen Gewinn ersten Ranges betrachten.» Der gestaltenreiche Zyklus seiner Familiengeschichte der Forsytes, die er von der viktorianischen Ära bis in die nahe Vergangenheit spann, bietet ein faszinierendes Gesellschaftsbild Englands und ist bis heute das erklärte Meisterwerk seiner Epik geblieben. Bosinney und Irene, beide Fremde in dieser Familie und außer stande, in ihr heimisch zu werden, beginnen einander zu lieben. Die Affäre wird ruchbar. Der Familienklatsch greift um sich. Soamer nutzt eine Gelegenheit, seinen Rivalen zu ruinieren, um sich zu rächen. Daraufhin verläßt Irene sein Haus, kehrt jedoch freiwillig «i* den Käfig» zurück, unfähig, sich zu befreien.
