Contact seller5-star sellerCondition: Overall very good. The November 1959 edition of Black Orpheus: A Journal of African and Afro-American Literature. The magazine was founded in 1957 by Jewish German-born Ulli Beier, who came to Nigeria in the late 1940s to teach anglophone literature. Beier intended the magazine to expose aspiring African writers to th…e literary work both of their fellow Africans and of African Americans; he was particularly inspired by the works of Léopold Sédar Senghor and Aimé Césaire.[1] Starting in the 1960s, the magazine would be funded by the Congress for Cultural Freedom which, unbeknownst to its editors and contributors, was in turn funded by the CIA. This edition contains works by significant African and diaspora writers, including Amadou Hampâté Bâ of Mali, Léon Damas of French Guiana, Es'kia Mphahlele of South Africa, and Gabriel Okara of Nigeria. The book reviews section includes an important early review by Ghanaian poet and writer Georgmbeeyi Adali-Mortty of Things Fall Apart (1958), Chinua Achebe's debut novel. Beier's article, "Two Yoruba Painters," includes twelve pages of illustrations, and the magazine is illustrated throughout. [1] Peter Benson, "'Border Operators': Black Orpheus and the Genesis of Modern African Art and Literature," Research in African Literatures 14, no. 4, Special Issue on African Literary History (Winter, 1983): 431-473. . 60 pp magazine measuring 7 ½ x 9 inches, in paper wraps. Wraps quite worn with some tears especially at spine, some staining, with loss to lower right corner; very good minus. Contents generally excellent with one manuscript marking and a few areas of damage to gutters.

Add to basketSoftcover. Condition: Very Good. Quarto. Screenprinted color pictorial wrappers. Illustrations of African subjects and black and white photographs throughout text. Modest overall toning on front wrap, very good or better. *Black Orpheus* was the first African literary periodical published in English, Nigerian-based that helped e…ncourage a global readership for African writing. Over time, the editorial board would include some of the most influential modern African writers, among them Aimé Césaire, Chinua Achebe, and Wole Soyinka. *Black Orpheus* was founded in 1957 by Ulli Beier, a German-Jewish lecturer at Ibadan University. Beier read widely in traditional Yoruba folklore, as well as in the modern francophone literature of Négritude. *Black Orpheus* reflected both influences, and expanded them. Before the magazine's publication, "it was not widely considered that anglophone black Africa had any modern art or literature," notes Paul Benson in his authoritative history of the magazine, *Black Orpheus, Transition, and Modern Cultural Awakening in Africa*. Distribution of the magazine was erratic, and individual issues are very uncommon. The magazine's vibrant covers, designed by Beier's wife, the artist Suzanne Wenger, isolated details of traditional African art forms to produce an immediately recognizable, strikingly modern aesthetic. *Black Orpheus* was active in providing a vehicle for new African writers; more than half of its material in the early years was written expressly for publication in its pages. The book review section that closed each number of *Black Orpheus* provided an opportunity for African writers to critique a diasporic literature increasingly engaged with the experience and idea of blackness, featuring early reviews of works by Langston Hughes, James Baldwin, and V.S. Naipaul.
